dog messing in the car

I'm just asking this on the off chance that anyone has a bit of advice as I think it is just another case of being patient but I'll ask anyway u never know

My pup hates the car! had her a month now and shes done about 10 car journeys none longer than 10 mins and she messes and pees everytime.

We are in the process of taking her round the block in her crate (had to resort to this as the car was getting covered however much cardboard we put down!) in the back of the car which is an estate so shes not in a horrible dark space. Its about 3/4 mins tops but she eliminates prob 100 yards from the house. Been doing this for 4 days now and not had a clean run as yet. I know its early days and we will keep at it till she can manage it.

She really doesn't seem stressed at actually being in the car she jumps up and looks out the window and seems ok when we get her out apart from the fact shes sometimes covered in poo!

Just wondered if anyone else had ever had this problem and had any idea how long before they could take them out. Our other dog loves goin on walks in the local forest, but a 10 mins drive is too much yet and its a shame they are missing out on the fun!

Re: dog messing in the car

Have you tried just putting her in the car and sitting with her for a few minutes without going anywhere? Then take her out of it before she has had the chance to soil, give lots and lots of praise and then do it again a little later, repeating it two or three times a day until she gets the hang of it. Once she is used to just sitting in the car and not going anywhere, try starting the car up with her in it. It may take time and perserverance on your behalf but it will be worth it if it works for your girl.

Sounds like a good plan above, lots of little steps. You could try feeding her in the car (obviously just parked, not driving around) just to make her more confident in it.

Jayjay has a wee everytime we put him in the car for some reason so we just put him in, and take him straight back out to have a wee and then he's fine. It's really weird!!

Re: dog messing in the car

you could also try to desensitise her , the world passing by outside to dogs can be quite un nerving so the whole getting in to the car isnt a problem, its when its moving ???? try covering the crate with a big blanket so that she cant see outside this way it should make the whole thing more pleasurable , she may just be panicing and soiling her self as a result of watching outside wizz by scary to a lil doggy lol .

Re: dog messing in the car

Thanks for all your replies, lots of little things I can try, open to trying anything lol.....just want her to be happy in the car and not stressed about it and a stress free other half would be good too. He's even bought and old estate car so it isn't too big a deal, and so that the other one doesn't get too wrecked The lengths we go to!!

The spaniel is the opposite she loves it. Its funny when u open the boot one cant get in quick enough and the other one legs it lol!

I did try that at the beginning. When we 1st got her if you put her in the car she would shake terribly, so for about a week just put her in and out not going anywhere just praised her and she got a treat and she def doesnt shake now. So I guess thats a start. Will try the starting it up with her in there and see how she goes. We will get there

Re: dog messing in the car

I know its an old thread lol but thought I would update it as I'm so pleased!

We started 8 days ago, going round the block in the car.

1st 4 days got wees n worse everytime!

days 5 - 7 just wees

Last nite was the 1st run with a dry crate and she jumped in the back of the car herself to get in it!

It just goes to show how it really is just down to patience. will try twice round the block tonite and if she manages that we will be able to get to the forest and some lovely walks again! I am so chuffed

Well done Paula for not giving up, some people try something once or twice then say it didn't work, well it wouldn't, would it.
