Help

Hi, My name is Wendy and I have a 5 year old Old English Sheepdog.
He is generally well behaved, although we have a problem with him in that he
barks and cries whenever visitors go to leave the house. We did have a behaviour therapist come to him, but she said he was the most stubborn dog she had ever seen. We tried the bottle with pebbles, the water spray but nothing seems to work. I am running out of ideas and patience now. It is only
visitors that he will not allow out of the house. He accepts me going to work and is no problem. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Re: Help

Welcome to the Forum! I am sure - if you ask about it in the Dog section - they will sort your visitors out!

Re: Help

This is mostly teratorial behaviour he thinks he is boss and gets upset when people leave . My advice would be to remove the dog to the garden or another romm where he canot see or hear the people go . Then bring him back into the room and reward him if he remains calm , ask people not to give him any attention when they arrive too no eye contact stroking or talking he needs to understand its not his job to be concerned with who comes and go,s , When he is calm people can fuss him but only when he is calm and not asking for attention . hope this helps
Andrea

Re: Help

As well as the above advice have you never thought to teach him to speak on command? By doing this you can also teach him to be quiet on command too.

That's a simular idea to what we are trying to do with the pups. When we are expecting guests we put them away in their "room" until they calm down and then put them back in before people leave. We are trying to make them see that it's not their concern who is coming into the house (that's Milo's job ).

It seems to be working slowly as they don't get over excited when seeing people come in anymore, although they still go mad once let out but they are slowly getting better.
