my border hates to be picked up!

hello everyone!
i have a border terrier who is nearly 2 years old and over the past couple of months he has started hateing being picked up. He never used to mind when we first got him and i have spoken to the owners and they said that he has never been dropped or held in a uncomfortable posistion , so i can't understand his behaviour i mean hes not old and has no injuries that would make it uncomfortable to be picked up!
He stays outside during the day and we bring him in on a night to go 2 sleep but we have just put a very expensive carpet down in the hallway and in his usual style he used to just run straight in, but we don't want his muddy paw prints on the carpet so me and my bf carry him, but like i say lately he has started to really struggle when we are holding him i just don't know why?
any info would be very helpful

you may need to check that he is not hurt in anyway....he might be in pain when someone picks him up

Re: my border hates to be picked up!

When you pick up a dog its removing there choice of running away if it frightens them if you see it from his view all of a sudden he is wisked up to a height that may be scary to him , some just dont like it , as an alternative to picking him up get him used to sitting at the back door before you let him in and have his paws cleaned , close any doors that might mean he can run through open the back door slowly and with treat in hand tell him to sit, i use some old towles they are always by my back door for muddy feet , then genty clean his paws then give him the treat . you could always have another treat prepared to walk him calmly to wherever you want him to be then again reward him . As dogs grow up they will tend to change thier minds as to what once they liked or let you do and what they prefer as adults . but ultimately your in charge and he needs to know that .

Re: my border hates to be picked up!

well he is dead well behaved so i mite try stopping him at the door and wiping his paws i just can't understand his suddern dislike of being picked up, when he was a pup he used to jump up and would carry on till ya caught him and held him for bout 5 mins, maybe its because hes gerrin heavier

Good advice from Andrea, most dogs don't like being picked up, but some tolerate it better than others.
