Question Scared or Dominant help please

My border collie who is now 22 weeks old still seems to be a bit timid although i must admit only at certain times

eg:strangers coming to house, new toys certain noises etc

Tonight while brushing my older collie with no problems i decided to brush kian afterwards he lunged for the brush but i think it was more in a scared sense than an aggressive one ,i proceed with treats and loads of praise but to no avail he ran behind the settee i thought if i backed down he would of won so i again tried by showing him that it was not going to hurt him by doing the older dog again in front of him, then i even lay the brush down beside him but he again snapped i have to add there was no growling though

Is this just normal puppy behaviour when scared of something new? my older collies 14 and i can never ever remeber him being like this

I carried on and gave loads praise and treats now i am here thinking is this going to be an aggressive dog or was i wrong the way i handled the whole situation ,any advice on this would be greatly appriciated
thanks

Re: Scared or Dominant help please

My 10 week old border collie has no problem being groomed. He wanted to eat the brush the first few times but he wants to eat everything new to him. I'm sure with perseverance he will get used to it. You could try mimicking the grooming process with your hands a few times before trying with a brush again and then slowly introducing the brush abit at a time once he has got used to you handling him in that way.

Re: Scared or Dominant help please

Thank you ajshep for your comments and advice

Tory we got him at eight weeks old as the farmer was going to shot him due to his white head he is great around my severlly handicapped son and never ever shows any agression towards him atall ,like i said maybe i am just over reacting to tonight with the brush but he was like this 2 weeks ago when the gas man came to the house he kept backing away although his tail was wagging all the time and not between his legs as soon as the man went to leave he jumped all over him licking his face

he is fantastic with our older collie aswell

Can't believe they were gonna shoot him because he had a white head, that's shocking!

Have you socialised him? Is he used to people coming to the house?

hiya ajshep
I know i was sickened as to why farmers seemingly do not want a collie with a white head they say you cannot work them which i looked up and it is all a load of crap i love his wee white head regardless

Yes he has been socialised is fantastic with people when on his extension lead but if outside last thing at night at front of the house on grass if people pass by he barks i am trying to overcome this by a sharp yank of his lead and a firm NO

Only reason he is on extension lead as he has ran away twice and does not come back recall is next on my list of priorities happy days lol

BTW just saw jayjay omg he is adorable

It's to do with the sheep not respecting dogs with too much white as the black colour is what shows the dominance over them. Doesn't mean they don't make excellent pets though!

The garden problem is that the people are just passing and when he barks they just carry on as if his barking is scaring them off, that's the way he'll see it. Everytime he barks the people go away and he has done his job.

Try to get people coming to the house and staying, fussing him and giving him treats so he see's people visiting as a good thing. Obviously he see's your home as his territory and as long as people aren't coming and staying he'll think his barking is warning them off.

We are inviting everyone and anyone over at the moment to get the pups used to people coming into the house. Luckily, socialisation is easy for us as we have people coming over with dogs all the time with the business.

Oh and Jayjay says thanks for the compliment!

Re: Scared or Dominant help please

Im not experienced enough to know if he is dominant or nervous but my terrier was a bit the same, we now take him to agility lessons and he absolutly loves it, he has got a lot calmer and more confident. The borders there are brilliant, I think they are so intelligent they need something to think about. Perhaps you could go to obedience classes or puppy classes at the moment to establish that you are the pack leader, good luck, its great u saved him. we get a lot in rescue kennels in Wales as farmers will not keep them if they dont work. The cruel ones abandon them on the mounains to fend for themselves.
