when to train my pup?

hi guys

Afghan is 5weeks old GSD pup

i am wondering when to start training him ?

where to find treats ,when i got to pet mall all i find are sticks and biscuits and he doesn't likes biscuits ..sticks would be too big for treats .

if i should start training .. here are couple of questions

1) what to train?
2) what treats to get?
3)till now he doesn't eats anything besides bred with him milk and vitamin supplement. as advised by vet. So, what should i be using a treats :?

Re: when to train my pup?

I reckon it's never too early to start teaching them things like sit & a few of the basics, although I've never had a pup as young as 5 weeks so I can't be sure exactly I started teaching Monty sit etc when we got him at about 8 weeks old. What I did for treats was, I got one of the small puppy stick thingys, think they were pedigree, and cut it into small bite-sized pieces for him as a pup. Found it worked perfectly. Maybe if he really likes the bread, you could use that as a treat? Sorry I can't be of more help!

Why on earth have you got a puppy so young? It should still be with its dam and littermates! Even Guide Dog puppies aren't taken away from their litter until 6 weeks !

ETA - and what do you mean about him eating "bred" ?

Re: when to train my pup?

I would leave any form of training until 8 weeks and then not as formal training but incorporated into play times.
Treats are a difficult one with a puppy as their tums can be upset very easily if giving too many, so part of the food you feed should be best while a small pup.
Have you not got your pup onto meat yet?

I believe the OP is from India ( i could be wrong though) so they do things slightly different over there.

I think on another thread that they stated that a vet has recommended bread and milk for the pup.

Re: when to train my pup?

Hi ya,

As treats I give my 7 1/2 week old puppy Super dog puppy. Its a complete food that he has at meal times but I use it as a treat because that way I find it easier to take into account his daily meal intake.

5weeks old concerns me, I thought that shouldnt be taken away from mum until between 7 and 12 weeks

Re: when to train my pup?

I'm surprised that a pup is away from its mother at five weeks old? My understanding is that seven to eight weeks is normal.

The breeder must have weaned your pup onto some sort of food? You need to find out what this is (if you don't already know) and feed your pup four times a day, at least, at that age.

As for training, the only thing I'd consider at that young age is getting a pup used to a recall, ie coming back to their name.

Yes I appreciate that they might do things differently in other countries but surely any vet won't recommend bread and milk for a 5 week old pup?!
