My mums dog a little shitzue is driving her mad with barking all the time, she has brought a collar that gives off a high pitch sound when he barkes, but it is not working, just scaring mums other dog,

she would like to get a different sort of collar to sort this out, can anyone recommend one please,

the dog is very bad and things are reaching a pitch, so I thought i would ask the forum for help???

"Barking all the time"

What, ALL the time? Literally? Or are there things which set it off? Noises outside/postman/hearing other dogs bark/whatever?

Barking is quite self-rewarding behaviour - some dogs just love the sound of their own voices

The thing with the postie is, that to the dog he is making the postie go away. It doesn't occur to him that the postie would go away anyway Same with dogs which bark at thunder.

Does he bark when he's left alone, while you're out etc?

Personally I like my dogs to bark a couple of times - it a) Alerts me to someone at the door (which I don't usually hear) and b) It alerts potential intruders that there are dogs in the house.

It sounds as if the best thing you could do is teach a "speak" on command, and conversely a "quiet" command, so that after a couple of woofs you can turn it off

Re: Barking mad

she wants to use a collar that sprays a smell up at his face when he barks,, but like you I think this is a good thing and she should control it instead of stopping it!!!!

has anyone used a spray collar before?

I do use them. Just wondering what was the answer about the walks? You need to exhaust other options before using gadgets. Apart from dealing with the sympton, which is excessive barking, what has actually been done about WHY she is barking?

Deffinetly nice long walks help exhaust them, they are more content to bark less and just relax is they've had a good walk....

Birdie Wife will become famous soon enough
Re: Barking mad

Is your mum inadvertantly reinforcing the behaviour by giving the dog attention when it barks?

The sad thing is, Mum is not in the best of health, so the dogs don't get walked enough to exhaust them, mum does try, and i go over and walk them as and when I can,

Don't get me wrong the dogs want for nothing they have the best food, cuddles, and visit the groomers every 8 weeks and are brushed inbetween,

Just wondered, I do have them over to run in the garden at the weekends sometimes but they are awful with my cats and give them a hard time,,

he ho thanks for your thoughts
