Unhappy bitten by a dog and mortified!

hiya guys, sorry this is long..............

i am a mum to 4 children, and 4 rescue dogs - and this is what happened last friday.

i went to walk my dogs on the local meadow, and as i entered it i saw a neighbours dog off lead by the gate. both neighbours were there with it.

have seen the dog loads of times, and know it to be a bit of a BIG scaredy cat - normally runs away on sight of my 4 (think its a great dane X, lurcher type, altho others reckon its rhodesian ridgeback - but either way, its big, lol).

so i thought i would walk past keeping my dogs on leads with the intention of letting mine off further up. we were too close to the gate anyways, and theres a busy road nearby so i always walk on a little.

i smiled and said hi to my neighbours, and one of my dogs barked - so i turned
to tell her she was being silly and to stop it - when my neighbours dog suddenly charged at us! i THINK it was going to bite my lurcher boy who was on my right side - but missed, and before i knew it i realised i was bleeding. the scariest thing is - i cant say 100% that it was their dog that bit me - i mean, i was bitten before i had the chance to turn, and my lurcher rests his head on my right thigh - what if he was trying to have a go at the other dog who was jumping all over us? my lurcher has never shown a hint of aggression - not so much as a grumble or a raised lip - but he was rescued less than a year ago and i dont know his history either. i dont doubt he is a lovely sweet boy, and if it was him, he was trying to protect me, and he's terribly clumsy!

my oh says it couldnt have been him, and must have been our neighbours dog who incidentally were mortified at the whole thing and said they will now walk their dog muzzled - even tho, for him it was also a 'first offence' and he's never done anything like this before.

hospital visit, tetanus jab, clean up and dressing later and i'm exhausted - and just feel so sad

i am a HUGE dog lover - and have worked with animals and owned dogs for many years - i just feel so confused, and my confidence is really knocked - and now of course my dogs are sensing that the top dog has the collwobbles and no one feels very safe

thanks for your thoughts xxx

Ouch!! That looks painful!

I know it's hadr but you can't let your dogs sense that your confidence has gone, or they will feel it.
I guess no one knows for sure which dog it was though the neighbour is at fault for their dog not being under control.

Is there anywhere else you can walk your 4 for a while it might help get a bit of confidence back.

Re: bitten by a dog and mortified!

right im gonna be tough with you (tough love lol) get back out there tomorrow and hold your head high, the longer you leave it the harder it will be and you may never want to walk them again, who ever did it it was not intended for you, i really believe this. I remember when i had a motorbike accident , i really didnt want to get on it but i knew the longer i left it the worst it would be, so after two days, still hobbling a little i got on my bike, wasnt happy about it but i knew i had too and went to local shops, its was really nerve wracking but i did it and after a few weeks going short distances i was back to normal again. At the moment your licking your wounds so to speak but tomorrow is another day. think positive , it was a one off and you will be fine!

Oh you poor thing! You do need to get back on the horse (so to speak!), very easy for me to say but your dogs need you to be strong.

Get yourself some rescue remedy, that stuff is a miracle!! Honestly it just takes the edge off any nerves.

Re: bitten by a dog and mortified!

thanks everyone for your thoughts i DO love dog people!!!

i had completely forgotton about rescue remedy - have some in my bag - will take some tomorrow

not sure i'd have enough hours in the day to walk them seperately - but i long to gab my little trustworthy jack and take off for an hour or 2 sometimes i LOVE the fact that i take in sob stories, and sometimes i wonder WHY i have made my life so complicated!!!! of course when all is running well and i am feeling balanced - i look at my life, and my dogs and feel blessed. this week tho, i feel hassled and almost like giving up. it was all ticking along smoothly until i fell for a sob story over a 10 year old westie, and she has well and truly upset the apple cart!!!! i'm sure she'll settle in time, but she might also be the straw that broke the camels back..............

anyways, working on chin up and shoulders back - packing my rescue remedy, and hoping time heals my psychie as well as it is my wound

again - thank you for taking the time to reply - i truly appreciate it xxx
