3 problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My pup is 7mths old now and we are still having a few problems. The first one is she is still having accidents in the house. I understand that she is still a pup but if I leave the back door open (which we do a lot as it has been reasonable weather) she will go outside for a wee but if we close the door (today it was peeing it down) she makes no attempt to go to the door and wees where ever she is without warning. It's no good going back to basics as i feel we never left them!!!!!!!!! We still take her out every hour, after play, food or upon wakening. We praise her when she does her business. She knows to go to the door to go into the utility where her food and water is and looks back at us to get our attention but does not seem to associate doing the same for going outside.
The 2nd problem is that she has started biting again. She was a nightmare as a youngster but lately she has been going for us. Today I was stroking her and she appeared to be enjoying it then all of a sudden she turned and bit me on the arm. She did a similar thing with OH yesterday.
The 3rd problem (sorry not long to go now) is that she bites on the lead. She has always been anightmare for pulling and we have just had to accept that because i was at my wits end trying all the techniques recommended. Well after her walks usually on the way home she jumps and barks and bites at the lead and nothing will stop her. We have to stand still until she stops, then walk on but she usually starts again. I am worried she will strangle herself as i have to hold the lead aloft to stop her from biting me instead of the lead. Sorry for being so long-winded but i can never remember any of my previous dogs being a problem

Re: 3 problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

she sounds adorable. My kind of pup, cheeky and a bit naughty. lol

Ok problem 1

do you praise when she goes outside?? if she goes inside do you throw her out?? because if you put her outside whenever she goes in the house she might start to think that going inside is the only way to get the door open. you could try training her to ask to have the door opened for her. our rottie has a funny growly noise when he wants a door opening and the ridgeback jumps at the door, that way you know who it is. lol. everytime your dog looks at the door/barks near the door open the door to let her out to encourage asking behaviours. always praise when going outside too.

problem 2

is she playbiting or is there some aggression to it, if its play, shout when she nips then turn around and ignore her until shes calm before you start fusing her again. unfortunatly at that age trainign can take a step backwards, they are getting ready to become teens.

Problem 3

for pulling on the lead you could a harness and put the lead on the front at her chest then when she pulls she will spin round. same idea as a head collar but without the risk of neck injury should she bolt. As for the chewing on the lead your doing the right thing, stop, ignore her until she calms down and them walk again. maybe with some treats once she is calm. how long do the walks last, it may be that shes still go too much energy, mybe extend the walking time or try to feed her a lower calorie food, you could just not feed her till she gets back then she wont have as much energy either.

Re: 3 problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes we praise her when she does it outside-neighbours must think we are mad. Usually we ignore it when she has done it inside but i must admit today i put her outside when she did it. She goes to the door when she wants to go into the utility but not when she wants to go outside.
Next-yes she appears agressive when she bites. Once she bit me when i tried to move her away from the guinea pig run that she was chewing.
With regard to walks-it's difficult to know whats best. On this forum i have been advised 5mins walk for each month which is no way enough for my dog (she is a collie) so we do walk her more. She is not over fed as often she will not eat her food for a couple of days (again i have been advised that she will eat when she is hungry). In fact yesterday's meal (its dry food) is still there un touched.

Re: 3 problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Training tires them out almost more than physical exercise - particularly clicker training, where they have to think a lot

Re: 3 problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes collies love clicker training. you could try that, the aggresive nipping is a common collie problem, can be stopped with more exercise, both physical and mental. clicker training classes might help calm her down which could reduce all these behaviours. or at least help her to concentrate so she is more easily trained

I fostered a collie who bit on the lead. I got a chain lead - instant fix!

Re: 3 problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your first problem, the weeing in the house, oh how i can sympathise with you. Molly is our 3rd pup and we have never had it so hard with toilet training, our others got the hang very quickly would paw the door or whine to go out, she never did so had to watch her like a hawk and even then she would stand in front of us and wee!!! she would lay in her bed not asleep and she would wee, its been a nightmare like yours we would pick up the food bowls and she would run to where the food is kept, when i put on my walking coat she would show me exactly where her lead was, far from daft, but a complete "numpty" in the weeing department, she will be 11months on the 19th and we are just beggining to relax (although not completely) our life for the past 8 months has revolved around molly's wee's. They do get there.

Problem no. 1:
This is a difficult one. I don't know whether training pads would work for the times when she can't go outside due to the weather? I know some people dislike pads as they feel they encourage dogs to pee indoors but I have personally had success with my dog as a pup with them. He was very quick to learn and once he knew to pee on the pad it was just a case of moving the pad to the back door. Then he would pee on the pad at the back door. Finally you'd remove the pad and if you saw him at the back door you'd quickly open the door and praise him lots for peeing/pooping outdoors. We had the occasional accident when we weren't quick enough but other than that it was a very speedy process.
Don't know if that helps though? Just go with whatever works for you.

Problem no. 2:

With the biting, I'd personally put her in timeout (on a lead, 20 seconds alone in a different room to you with her lead trapped in the door between the room which she is in and you so that you can hold the lead). What she is doing is trying to rough play with you. She isn't being nasty but by using timeout you teach that the moment she does that will result in you stopping the game and not paying attention to her.

Problem no.3:
With the biting on the lead. This is an excitment problem and something we experienced when my pup was younger. The trainer at our class advised us to get a thin chain lead and to use that for the next few walks or however long necesary. He very soon stopped the lead biting and we were able to get on with the heel training more effectively. Hope that helps

She won't go out first thing in the morning when she wakes up unless i am with her so was standing in dressing gown and trainers in back garden this morn

We tried newspapers once and she tore them to shreds-anything chewable on the floor is a no no. I am sitting here in the kitchen with the back door open just in case (freezing i may add) and Cassie has gone back to bed in her crate!!!For the lead biting i will certainly try to get a chain lead as i know its due to excitement and not aggression that she bites it (she usually wants to be off!!)
