Bird – we are lucky in that the spare bedroom is on the corner of the apartment block so only adjoining point of contact is the ceiling with upstairs which may even be empty. Plus the concrete construction and the low drone of the A/C units help mask it adequately! (I hope!)

Pamela – we shut the room door mainly to deaden the noise a little and also so that if we want to stay up or do thigns while he’s in the pen he doesn’t get too worked up about not being with us. Do you think opening it would help? The soft toy sounds like a great idea although we struggle for such things here and delivery even via internet isn’t always reliable!! 

Yes I would try leaving the door open slightly as it could be that total isolation is too much at the moment. Some dogs have trouble with this.
I will see if i can find the ad for the dog with the heart beat.

Sounds to me like you are doing a fab job!! It's usually extreamly hard to adapt an orphened puppy to a home life and if he's only whining for 20 mins you've done great!!! Puppy's who've not had the benefit of a mothers teaching are usually extreamly hard to train and badly socialised in manners but with the care and attention you are giving it sounds to me like you're going to have a calm settled dog very soon. Lovely to read such a positive and caring post. For such a horrific start to life this little one has been extreamly lucky.

Pamela - we arent sure obviously due to him being a rescue dog but the popular opinion rigth now is he is a GSD x Saluki cross. Saluki's are very common here and he certainly has a lot of GSD in him. thats our best guess anyways!

Yes I think you are probably right, he is lovely what ever he is.
