Re: Dog Licking

I often wonder about this, whether mika's licking me is a sign of dominance or whether he does it because he loves me.

Woody used to lick me a lot but i think it was happy, i love you, licking. Dante barely does it although recently he's been giving me the odd lick or two he he.

With mika, he does it when he's sitting on my lap before he goes to sleep lol! I often wonder if he's doing it because he loves me or if he's making his mark on me, in other words a dominance thing. I think he does stop when i tell him to though..don't know really. I'll have to see tomorrow lol!

He does 'kiss' on command sometimes though

Oscar licks loads, usually when he's sleepy. I think it's a sign of affection. He gives kisses too. It was one of the first things we taught him! Poodles are very 'licky' by nature. When I first visited Oscar's breeder, she had about 10 poodles and I came out soaking wet! (Total exaggeration but you know what I mean! Except for the part about 10 poodles, she really did have loads of dogs!)

sounds to me like Mika is just being comfortable with you... plus hes still a pup I think and pups tend to like to lick/suckle kind of..

The "dominance" licking is more when it is done obsessively with the dog hovering over you... I think it would be quite easy to pick up that kind of behaviour as being problematic.

Peeing on you would be a mark of extreme submission and/or fear..wouldnt be too nice either

xx

No, peeing can indeed by a mark of dominance. Submissive urination would not be done on someone unless they were holding them.

Oblada - don't mean to be unkind (as I am usually accused of), but I am curious - where do you get your ideas from?

I don't think that's being unkind.
