Obedience training class

There is an obedience training class on a thursday night in the local town hall. I have heard people say this has really helped their dog with basic commands and obedience.

I really want to give it a go but one problem is stopping me. CONFIDENCE. i have low self confidence in myself and i know that when i walk in tht hall and my dog sees all these people and dogs he will go nuts. he gets far too excited and ends up pulling on his lead to get to these dog.

someone help.xx

Re: Obedience training class

Maybe call the organiser and ask how many dogs attend.

Tell them you are worried your dog may be over excited and i am sure they will put your mind at rest.

A decent class should let you just come and watch a couple of times so there isn't so much pressure to "perform" and you can see what the class is like. It will give your dog a chance to get used to the surroundings too.

Believe me you won't be the only one with an excited dog but that really is the point of these sorts of classes

Hope you go for it, they are invaluable if they are good.

Re: Obedience training class

It will be great for both of you. The dog will learn to be calmer around other dogs, the more he see's of them.

Ring the trainer and explain your problem. Maybe you could go a bit early and then be there when the dogs come in one by one. She may also get you waiting on the sidelines for a couple of weeks so that your dog calms down.

Whatever you do, make sure you go!

Defiantly go - it'll be worth it.
As Rainy and Goodvic said give the trainer a ring and explain things to her.
Classes are great, you'll find different dogs/owners are good at different things.
When I went there was a collie who jumped up and tried to play bite everyone but was so clever she was the best at all the commands. The trainer got everyone involved in calming her down.
Lilly was great at loose lead walking but wouldn't 'stay' as she would just follow me everywhere - LOL
The support form other owners was as valuable as the trainers it was great to be able to laugh at yourself when things didn't go well and celebrate your successes.

not doubting that at all but i know ill be so for the first wee while. its bad enough on walks. if he sees someone or soemthing thats him. he has to play. he isnt an agressive dog which i suppose is good.

I know exactly how you feel.
Bailey is exactly the same, I'm hoping to go to some training classes in a few weeks time.

Re: Obedience training class

I understand completely where you're coming from as I felt exactly the same before we started classes. I've always hated having to get up and do things in front of other people and try to avoid it wherever I can.
The suggestions from the others have been great. We always try to get to our class early to avoid having to walk in when everyone else is there- not only is it good for you not feeling like everyone's eyes are on you but it also makes it easier to control your dog.
The first class we had we did not have to demonstrate anything in front of the class- we were just given time to practise the exercises at the same time.
We've got our last session on Thursday and I have to say that my confidence has increased enormously over the last 8 weeks but I still cringe when I have to get up and show what we can do. I just put all my attention on my boy and try to forget about everyone else.
Whatever you do, don't be embarrassed by your dog's behaviour- all the dogs are there because they or their owners are having difficulties of some kind.
Just go for it and enjoy it as much as you can- it'll be a great bonding experience for you and your pooch.

Re: Obedience training class

A decent trainer will give you ideas and things to work on so that your dog starts to focus on you and stops going nuts when he sees a roomful of other dogs

A decent trainer will encourage you and make you feel as if you CAN do it and if you stick with it you'll find you and your dog improve gradually - sometimes you'll find improvements come in leaps and bounds!

I started off in puppy classes and when we moved on to a Competitive Obedience class all my dog wanted to do for the first couple of sessions was sniff the floor

I almost gave up there and then, since all the other dogs (much older and more experienced, granted) were doing heelwork, sendaways, retrieve, scent... and there was me with my littlun who was beside herself at seeing all these Collies and completely incapable of taking any notice of me

But within a couple of weeks she had learned that the other dogs were NOT for playing with and things just got better and better

Maybe ring first, ensure that the trainer uses kind, humane, positive methods (body swerve anyone who uses choke chains/punitive methods of training) and then go for it!! I guarantee the trainer will have seen dogs like yours a thousand times and everyone else will be too busy with their own dogs to worry about what yours is doing
