Smile Hmmmmmm not a nice habit...poo eating !!

Hi everyone!!

I'm new to the forum!

I wondered if anyone can help me...

I am the proud mum of a beautiful Grey Brindle Cairn puppy, he is smashing and a pleasure to own, but has developed a nasty habit...he eats Poo !!
Now for anyone who is sat thinking, he's a dog you stupid woman, he is going to eat sheep or cow poo, hold on just a second!.....he eats HIS OWN!! or the Retriever's poo that he lives with!

It is getting to be a real problem now and often I get home from work to a particularly pungent lick!!

Has anyone experienced/cured this, I have tried changing his food, ensuring there is no poo around, and even catching him at it and telling him off! I am at my wits end!

Many thanks indeed!

Re: Hmmmmmm not a nice habit...poo eating !!

Thank you! that's appreciated!

Its such a shame as it is his only real fault, trouble is that obviously I worry what he could pick up if eating cat poo and things, so I am trying all I can to stop it!

i wonder if it has anything to do with his early days diet, he was brough up on sausage and rice from a few weeks old, I cahnged this when I got him but now that he is on no meat, just dry food I wonder if this is a problem!

***** is the poo eating expert on here, he cured his dog of eating it, if you look back through old threads on this section you will find the thread where he says the name of the tablets he used. Or he might be helpful and come on and tell you.

Thanks very much to all...I will see if I can search out ***** and ask about the tablets, or try to find the old thread! I really appreciate all your postings, and any other thoughts you may have or hear about regarding it!

Re: Hmmmmmm not a nice habit...poo eating !!

OK - This is a problem I had recently with a pup. It's a bit of a taboo subject that is quite common and people seem to ignore so I thought I'd tell you about my experience incase it might help anyone else out there - who might not want to ask for help about Poo eating.

When my American Bulldog pup got to about 3 and half months he decided to start eating his own poo. It was horrible!!! his breath would stink vile as you can imagine! And being halfway through his house training it made things very difficult as I never knew if he had been or not as he would eat the evidence - EW!

As soon as I discovered what was happening I started searching the net to find out what was wrong with my dog - was he demented??? I was relieved to find out that this is quite a common problem in both puppys and adult dogs and is know as Coprophagia.

So why do they do it? It can be for many reasons. Poor diet, boredom, poor digestion, too rich diet or some believe they do it to hide their poo due to being afraid of their owners reaction - this could be due to a telling off they have recently had.

At the time my dog had been eating what I had been eating due to running out of his regular dog food - so that was the first thing I sorted, I also gave him some tablets called deter which make his poo taste discusting. Some people also recommended feeding my dog pineapple with his food which I was told would give the same affect as the deter tablets!-
The Deter tablets and change of diet resolved this problem immediately and I was so relieved and for once happy to be cleaning up dog sh*t again!!
