Question growling

Hi everyone, I am new here!

Just wanted to aske about my dogs growling
He is just over a year old and is a border/bearded collie mix.

We moved in January to a new house and since we have moved he growls everytime someone walks past our front door.
He growls and runs to sit next to/behind me or jumps in his bed if I am not around.
If someone knocks at the door, he is ok no growling but if someone walks past or next door is going in or out he starts.

Our old house had a front garden and was quieter. This house opens right onto the street and next doors door is right next to us! Could this be it?

Why is he running to me? Is he trying to protect me or have me protect him? Is this behaviour ok?

How can we stop this? He never ever growls any other time and shows no aggressive behaviour at all.

Thanks for any help you can offer

It sounds like he wants protection from you if someone walks into the house he doesnt growl as thats what happened in your other house, so nothing for him to be worried about, where as before he didnt have staragers being that close to his door and is wary, ime sure he will get used to it when he realises nothing bad comes of people being that close passing his door. Bless him

You're welcome have you tried opening the door and letting him sit at the door watching people pass?

Re: growling

are you sure your not reinforcing his behaviour by say patting/treating or saying good boy?
you could always wait till he does this do a correction - when he comes to sit beside, walk off and do something else

Re: growling

I'm sure I don't reinforce this behaviour, I try just to completely ignore him! But thank you for your suggestions, I will try both trying to let him see people walking by with the door open and walking away when he comes and sits by me!

Re: growling

I would not look at him when he growls and if he comes to you move away at the same time saying "leave It" calmly but assertive. Eventually he will ignore it, we moved in January too, where we were before was sideways off the road and now we are in an open plan road and our Yorkie started to react to more noise and that is how i stopped her.
