Talking problem walking my collie puppy

Greetings fellow dog owners.

I have a 4month old border collie. Very friendly and very playful. She's recently had all her injections and she's doing really well with her house training. She poops and pees outside in the garden (of course it's cleaned up afterward) and now I'm starting to take her for walks. It starts of really well, she's by my side, sniffing things and generally exploring the world. But after half an hour she really pulls at the lead. She chokes and huffs and puffs. I stop and get her to come to my side, I wait then go walking again, but she still tries to run ahead, chocking herself, I stop again I say NO! She does stop but when I walk again, she just runs ahead again. I've tried this and it seems to not work. I've even pulled at the lead but I don't like doing that. I want her to stop chocking herself because when we get home she has this red ring around her neck, poor thing. Also when we cross a road she tends to wrap around my ruddy legs. Are there any tips you guys can give me on how to make a silly puppy walk like a calm and normal dog. Thanks for the help xx

Re: problem walking my collie puppy

i have 5 golden retrievers and 2 bc and not 1 pulls on the lead, but the way i taught them was just to stop instantly and then give a little tug on the lead and it worked for me

but i don't know if this is a suitable training method for you as you don't want to pull the lead at all

well yeah, this is the problem. She had a red neck when I checked. I've done it before but it hasn't sunk in. I might just put her on wheels or something haha

Re: problem walking my collie puppy

haha it might be worth speaking to a professional trainer as they quite often have different methods for training puppies to walk on a lead

Re: problem walking my collie puppy

My collie is nearly 6mths and still pulls. Have posted a thread previously on the subject. The way we are trying at the moment is the stop and start method. It's very time consuming and takes us ages to get anywhere. At times it sounds like she's having an asthma attack.

Re: problem walking my collie puppy

The more you pull the lead backwards the more they will pull on it, you need to break that continuous pull and concentration on going forward by a pull on the lead towards you not back.
The stop and start method does work eventually, training for this takes a lot of patience and time. Try to keep the dogs attention on you instead of whats in front, by carrying a toy they like or talking to them but do not use their name.

Re: problem walking my collie puppy

We used the stop and start method combined with a halti. It took maybe 20 minutes and my dog is so stubborn its ridiculous. It was like yours pulling and choking himself.

I know what you mean. I was so tempted just to let her run off I get sick of hearing her weezing. I even ran with her (which is fun exercise) but yeah, it takes patience, which is so hard at times because sometimes she just doesn't listen.
