pulling on the lead.

Ouy cocker spaniel dog pulls like a train on the lead, ive tried using a halti but he just closes his eyes and pulls harder!ive probably left it to late now to stop this as he is now 2.I meant to take him to puppy training classes but work commitments made it difficult so we never went.I havent got any experience in dog training any one got any ideas?

Re: pulling on the lead.

He's not too old to learn, you've just got to find the right technique for him. I'm sure someone with more knowledge on this subject than me will give you some good help!

Re: pulling on the lead.

stick with the head collar they do eventually get it through to their heads that its not nice to pull , cockers are abundant with energy and can be head strong so you need to make sure he respects that your boss , when he starts to pull stand still make him sit wait a min till he calms and then walk again using the command heal , this is telling him that pulling gets him nowhere , repeat this each time he pulls it could take you half an hour to get 100 yards but if he realises he isnt going to get his own way he should start to learn , perserverance is they key dont let him do it one day and not the next you need to be consistant if he continues to pull while trying the method ive mentioned , go home then he dont get his walk it will soon sink in .

Re: pulling on the lead.

Firstly check the halti you have is not too big for him, some cockers need a size one some a size two, unfortunately halti's like any training aide, some dogs learn to pull on them, you need to get in quickly and turn the dogs head (as per instructions), but this is as the dogs head goes just past your leg, don't wait until he is 3 inches or more in front of you, as you will not be able to turn it, he will be at the wrong angle.
Once a dog has learnt to pull on a head collar, it is hard work to stop them, but it can be done, good luck.

Re: pulling on the lead.

i think treats should help ou too. as you're walking along encourage him to saty by your side by offering the treat so he can see it, wen he has walked with you a little then let him have it...the treat i mean! give him lots of praise and encouragement
