How do i stop the barking

Hi,

I have a cavalier king charles and every time i get her lead out she barks like mad and does not stop even when she gets out side ,a couple of months ago my 18 month old cav also started doing the same.
They really make a lot of noice and neigbours have complainted.
I have now have 3 ,13 week old cavs and i don`t want them to end up doing the same and at the moment taking them out with out my other 2 dogs as not to scare the little ones.

Has anyone had this same problem ad what did you do to stop it.

Hi,When you get leads out and the barking starts, turn your back and take no notice of them,if they stop turn round if they start again turn back,it can some times take a long time.If they stop barking but start when you get out side,go back in and start again. It does work but can take time depends on dog.Good luck..

Re: How do i stop the barking

Agree with Tory if you continue with putting the lead on and going out with them making noise it tells them this behaviour is ok , turn away from them and if this doesnt stop them put the lead away and move out of the area ignor them till they are quiet and go back again when they are calm . It could take a while to get them to get the message so dont worry if you dont make it out of the front door for a day or 2 it wont hurt them and it will stop the neighbours from moaning . All they are doing is displaying pack mentality getting excited at the thought of going out , In wolves ( all dogs are descended from these animals and they do still have basic instincts such as hunting even the cute ones ) when they get ready for going on a hunt they vocalise with each other and this is nothing more than such behaviour but you must make sure that they understand its you that calls the shots and when they go out its on your terms , and that means quiet and calm , perservere and you,l be ok

I had this problem too with my dog, Purble. I used an anti barking collar. I was really sceptical at first, but it really worked. Give it a try. I bought mine from Anti Barking Dog collar £74.95. Hope that helps !!

Re: How do i stop the barking

I agree with you all! We had the same problem with our Golden Retrievers, as soon as they saw the leads, the barking would start!

How we dealt with this was to ignore them, in more explanation...get the leads, set them down on the side and walk away, if a bark was heard, a water pistol over the gate sorted that, and then when they saw the leads they did not immediately associate them with getting walked, it was more, if we are quiet and behave we will get a walk, if not...we are going to get sprayed with a water pistol!

Hope that helps, but I think the key is to ignore the demanding behaviour that is the bark! It has to be on your terms and certainly if your neighbours complain (which we experienced too!) then you have to take the energy out of the reaction...

Best wishes & hope you have success.

Re: How do i stop the barking

All great advice.

Personally, I have always taught my dogs to bark on command and therefore they stop on command.

Nina - I have heard that before. Perhaps teaching the dogs to 'speak' on command will help you to quiten them on commeand also.

Re: How do i stop the barking

Thank you everyone for you great advice.

Its starting to work jubilee never barked when we went out the last 2 days ,but winston started barking when i was just going out the front door so i took him back in doors and took his lead off and he stayed home while i took the rest of them.

He was really upset when we came back ,so hopefully he will learn lol.

Re: How do i stop the barking

Just distract them or ignore them and they get bored and stop barking. My dog does exactly the same and thats the trick i use. Good luck.
