Bailey getting out of his harness...

As a lot of you may know I have a 10 month old Lab called Bailey.
When taking him for a walk, I use a harness because he doesn't like things pulling on his neck and with a harness he walks by my side for the entire time.

When he sees people, he'll try to jump up at them and he gets a fuss and eventually calms down, so I don't have a problem with that.

But... there's a woman who has a trolley with her whenever she is out and whenever Bailey sees it, his tail goes in between his legs, he pulls and pulls and pulls until he's out of his harness and just runs off. I've changed my walking routes plenty of times, going different places etc and she still manages to turn up in one of the same streets as me. This is the only thing that he is really frightened. He has good recall so I am able to call him back and once I've called him back and put his lead on it just ruins the rest of the walk because he remains scared all the way back home. I really hate seeing him so frightened, has anyone got any advice about what I could do?

Re: Bailey getting out of his harness...

Try and spot her before he does.

Cross the street and tell Bailey to sit, have a tasty treat in your pocket ready for when you meet her (like cheese, ham, chicken) just stand there and say really calmly "sit, good boy, sit) giving him small pieces of the treat.

When she passes continue. You must distance yourself but stay really calm and controlled, if he stresses tell him "no" firmly, might be worth popping a short piece of rope on his collar so you can grab that for extra control if he stresses.

The other thing you could do is get yourself to the boot sale and buy one then gradually de sensitise him to it in the house.

Good advice from rainy

Get a halti link or something to attach his harness to his collar. That way if he does freak and pull out, you are still atached to him

Re: Bailey getting out of his harness...

Thanks guys!
I do cross the road and try to calm him, so I'm getting somewhere.
Just need to get my brother to do it too.

The thing to remember is that you must show him it's ok by being calm and in control.

Oscar didn't like buses and bikes when we first went out so i just used to stand dead still and say "steady" to him but no real attention while he squirmed then when he stopped we carried on our way. Not too much fuss, keep it really calm and controlled.

That was a 14wk old cocker though and not a big strong 10 month old bouncy lab
