6mth old still pulling

would you expect a 6mth old to have stopped (or reduced) pulling?? I am so frustrated. Went out this eve in the pouring rain and wanted to come straight back. It can't have been any fun for my pup-i know it certainly was'nt for me. I have tried EVERYTHING. The smelly treats are just ignored - tried swedish meatballs and have even baked tuna biccies (dont even bake for my kids!!.) Its like they don't exist-though she will do anything for treats in the house. My back and arm are aching and my fingers were white. I tried the stopping routine-she just thinks it is the ideal time to have a 'sniff'. I stop when she pulls and as soon as the lead slackens, usually when she sits down after sniffing, i move on but i don't think she associates starting again with the lead being slack because she goes straight back to pulling. I literally moves 2-3 steps before having to stop. I have tried to train her every day but seem to be getting no where. It seems easier just to take her places in the car. I love walking and on days off walk for about 2hrs (pup is not old enough to do that yet) and feel that i won't be able to take her with me as i would not enjoy it. Am i expecting too much-it just seems that the older, and stronger, she gets the harder it is becoming and she does not seem to have any improvement. Sorry about the rant but i am sooooooooo frustrated.

Re: 6mth old still pulling

Have you tried this ?
Every time your dog pulls, turn round & go in the opposite direction, it is a much quicker & more effective way of resolving pulling on the lead than any i have ever known, the dog learns to watch you closely in anticipation of your next move, so you end up with a more attentive dog which stops pulling on the lead! Sorry to repeat if you already have tried this & good luck if you haven't !

Re: 6mth old still pulling

My 9 month lab still pulls. Its not all the time, he has good days and bad days but the stopping and turning around methods have helped me but He is going through what I call the terrible twos at the moment where he seems to have conveniently forgotten everything he has been taught. I started with 3 sessions a day. the first few days i got no further than 20 metres down the path. Don't be afraid to end the walk earlier if he is pulling. Have you tried a good play session before a walk to get rid of some of his excess energy? I also carry a water squirter bottle with me and if he lunges rather than just having a taught lead i squirt his muzzle. breaks his pull straight away and I can get him back to heel.
I know how frustrated you must feel. I long for the last dog I had who was guide dog trained and an absolute dream to walk. In fact, i once dropped her lead without realising as she stayed by my side. Only realised when she stopped to sniff something and i kept on walking. I love dog walking but it really isn't a joy when you feel every walk is a battle and you come to dread them. I wish you lots of luck and hugs.

Re: 6mth old still pulling

Hi, i know exactly how you feel- its frustrating! I tried to train a collie who was like that. When I say tried, I mean I did try every trick in the book to no avail.
Poppy LOVES treats- Indoors! Outdoors? It could be the most smelliest yummiest treat and she would look right past it. Even if it was on the end of her nose! I tried chocolate (the doggy stuff), tripe (my hands smelt of it for ages after).

Tried the Dog borstal way, dropping th lead and goin the other way- I got Dizzy, after half an hour in the dip in the park (so no one could see me and think I was mad!).
Tried stopping when she pulled, going backwards, nothing worked she still pulled like a bloomin steam train!

In the end I decided to alternate between a halti (which she wasn't keen on, and either was I) and a no-pull harness.

I really reccomend the Walkezee harness, I now use it on my own dog who loves to pull (all the tricks in the book to stop her pulling she will stop for a few weeks then pull again!).
I know alot of folk advise against a harness but ths ones different- the chest strap is not fixed. Therefore, when the dog pulls you have control over the front of the body.
Dog Training Harness by Walkezee Stops Pulling ! BLP* on eBay, also Harnesses, Dogs, Pet Supplies, Home Garden (end time 09-May-09 08:43:07 BST)

I used it on the collie mentioned above and I dunno what it was but something clicked and she realised what I wanted from her. After a few times out in the harness she had almost stopped pullig completely.

xx

Re: 6mth old still pulling

Have actually bought a new harness today-it is mainly for my in-laws when they walk her as i am frightened she will pull them over and break something (the adults will break something not the dog!!!!!). I am still going to try lead walking. Today spent 10 mins turning around-constantly!!-the neighbours must think i am mad. We then went to plessey woods and had a lovely day. She is lying asleep in her basket as we speak. Feel a bit better than yesterday. Must have been the rain.

Re: 6mth old still pulling

Halti, slip lead, stopping & starting etc etc - pregnancy seems to have worked and my shoulder is recovering One of ours (the pregnant one) is a nightmare for pulling, she can be absolutley perfect and knows full well how to walk to heel but choses not to and drives me to despair but only on the normal lead or slip. The halti works for her but as soon as we go back to a normal collar and lead off she goes again - everything is too interesting.

One thing that seems to help is a half check collar. I tried the stopping thing but then learnt that all I was doing was teaching her to stop and start not stop pulling, but you must be shown how to use it and make sure it has been fitted properly.

It is worth asking your trainer about how to sort the problem out before your shoulder suffers too much.
