loopy dog

I have a 3 year old border collie and for as long as I can remember keeps jumping on the spot, I don't know if this is a psycological problem but he does this at least 10 times a day he will walk back and forth then start jumping on the spot for a whole 10 minutes and he barks constantly when he's doing this, it seems to be worse when visitors come to the house, he will also run up and down the stairs and twirl on his back legs it's as if he's performing for them. If I tell him off or stop him from doing this he cries until you tell him go on then go and play and he will start again. What is wrong with him and how does he have all this energy?*

Re: loopy dog

How much exercise does he get? What food do you feed? Border Collies naturally have a lot of energy, it could be over excitement or simular.

Re: loopy dog

He has an hour walk each day down the beach, we also have a very large garden but he won't go out unless you stay out there with him. He has tinned food and always eats it.

Border Collies generally need at least 2 hours exercise a day, they're a very very active breed. He may just need more exercise to wear him out. Also commercial tinned food often has additives and E numbers that might make him hyperactive!

I'd try it and see how it goes, they are a very demanding breed. I wouldn't worry about it unless he persists after extending his exercise.

Re: loopy dog

Border Collies were bred to be able to run for 70 miles a day, up hill and down dale, herding sheep, so as a pet dog they can appear to be hyperactive, but really he is just being a collie. As Alan says think about changing his food, in addition to more exercise, he could do with some mental stimulation, which is more tiring than physical work. BC love tracking and searching, for toys or food, see if you can find any dog training clubs near you, or any dog activities, give him an outlet for all his border collieness.
