Re: What to do with new puppy during the night?

Hi,

I'd also like to add, great choice of dog!!

Lily is a 13 week blue roan cocker. When we 1st got her, she poo'd in her crate twice, but after asking advice from here, we now give her her last feed at 9pm, NEVER let her go to bed without pooing sometime during the evening, and she sleeps from 10 til 6 and has been doing so for about the last couple of weeks. Sometimes, when we get up at 6, we even wake her, lol!! The only time she whines in the morning now is if she wants a poo!

She is in a very strict routine for the night - goes out to the loo, has her heat pad warmed (she then takes herself into her bed and waits for the pad!), we give her her night time kong, close her crate door and turn out the lights. (We left a night light on for her to start with, but she hasn't had that for the last couple of weeks) Sounds simple, but it did take a while to get this routine in place. The other night, hubby didn't give her her kong, and she just looked at him as if to say, 'you've forgotten something!' -- get into a routine and stick with it, it will really help!

We've never had her in our bedroom as like you, didn't want to get into this, but we did put a blanket over the crate with only the front side open so she can see us.

Re: What to do with new puppy during the night?

Lily was a top pup when it came to getting her to sleep through.

We made Lily's crate really comfy. It had nice warm blankets including a fleece that had the smell of her Mum on it. It also had an area with a drink and some newspaper. She also had her night time teddy bear.

About an hour before bedtime, we played with her a lot, thus tiring her out.

We then took her out side about midnight for her ablutions.

We gave her goodnight cuddle (she still gets this) and put her in her crate. :Locked the crate, gave her some bonios and that was it.

We had decided to tough it out with her and not give in to any whines.

However she did not cry at all.

She woke at 5.00 am the next morning for her ablutions -and had not messed in her crate at all.

Lily has slept through with out messing since day one. She is now in a big girls bed and will sleep until 7am in the morning.

Routine, consistency and being able to tough it out in the initial stages is key for success.

If only my kids were as easy as Lily to get in a good night time routine

Good luck
9 pm is def too late to be feeding him. We feed Mika around 7:00 pm every night.

Yep. Routine is definately the thing. I think a little distraction just when you go like a stuffed kong or bonio really helps.

Lily knows the routine now. As soon as the tv is off -she goes and sits by the back door waiting to go out for her wee. lol.

Re: What to do with new puppy during the night?

Hello all,

This was my original post and I have taken all the advice from you lovely helpful guys and we have now had 3 nights poo/wee/wailing free!!!! Yippee

I've changed her eating times to 7am, 1pm, 6.30pm. Nothing after that.

I've put her bed into the crate and put covers over it (still in the utility room). I go down to let her out around 4.30am (she's put to bed around 11pm) and then up around 6.30am/7am.

I don't speak to her when I get her out of the crate at 4.30am but do tell her how clever she is when she wee's outside, then straight back to bed.

Can't tell you how happy and accomplished I (and she I'm sure) feel!!!

Thank you once again.
