Getting something out of pup's mouth

Lily is a 13 week cocker.

How can we get her to 'drop' what she has in her mouth?!?

She picks up so much stuff to chew - leaves, grass, soil, wood, bark etc (don't think she swallows it), but if we try to get whatever it is she's picked up off her, she doesn't like it -- will growl, run away etc, and other than getting our fingers in there, won't give it up!! She's not even interested in exchanging what's in her mouth for food or toy!!

Any suggestions/ideas will be greatly apperciated!!

Re: Getting something out of pup's mouth

Well you need to teach her at first on the lead..
My pup is exactly the same so when he has a toy near me I take hold of it and ask him 'drop'. At first he held on but I prised it out his mouth and gave him a treat and lots of fuss, now if I ask hiom to drop he will drop it and run over quick for a treat and some fuss

You can teach 'leave too' have something your pup likes in your hand and ask him to leave, if he tries to take it, clost your hand. If when you say 'leave' he makes no move to take it, treat him from the other hand with something else. Then when you see your pup about to pick something up and say leave, he will. It won't happen overnight, but just practice

xx

Re: Getting something out of pup's mouth

Thought we had done really well with molly she is now 8 months and shes a springer but we have actually caused another problemWe have a pebbled drive and from her being really tiny the stones concerned me so whenever she picked one up i was really over the top i would say "give it molly" and bless her in no time whenever i said this she would drop it at my feet so i went really over the top treat, rubbing her and lots of "good girls". The problem is now she has missunderstood somewhere down the line because in the space of 10 minutes i can 20 pebbles or more in the house she obviously thinks shes a good girl for actually bringing the stones in a giving them to me Yes shes a good girl but ide rather not have half my drive brought into the house.

Mika is exactly the same, but he's only like that when he's tired. When i try and grab him to get him not to pick up leaves or things like that he too runs away. Its very frustrating

Re: Getting something out of pup's mouth

if you put your thumb and forefinger either side of their mouths you can open them no probs. Corrections like ah ah (firmly) also helps them know what to bit and what not. Appart from that pin them to the floor with the back of their head - the shock usually drops whatever it is in there - or you can remove it

Thanks for the advice and suggestions -- look forwards to the day when we don't have to get our fingers bitten

Hope Lily will become as good as your pup, Poisongirl
