is playing tug of war games a bad thing?

hi,
i have this bearded collie puppy he is 11 weeks old, and he absolutly loves playing tug of war games. but i have read somewhere that you shouldnt playtug of war games with puppys as it makes them agressive. is this true? he does love playing other games like fetch. although he never brings the ball back. and he loves chasing the balls on a rope.

I also play tug, but I always let them win as it builds confidence, but they do need to understand when the games over.

Red face Re: is playing tug of war games a bad thing?

yeah i think he will, it was the first time he had been in the company of strange dogs and the first time at the group, so i think it must have been a bit daunting for him.

Re: is playing tug of war games a bad thing?

I don't advocate tug of war games. And certainly not if kids are taking part. I see it often in aggresssion cases and I while it might build confidence I think there are better ways to do this. Search and retrieve games for a collie are far more mentally stimulating. I agree games must be finished on the humans terms dogs don't see things the way we do.
