Re: Basic training for a Bulldog bitch

Have you read up on the breed? We have inherited a 4yr old male who was never trained as a pup and not neutered until he was 3. They are probably one of the most stubborn breeds, so you need to be extra authoritive not to allow this trait to become dominant.

How about training classes? IF you cannot afford them then I would suggest buying a book. I have never owned a puppy, only adult rescue's so am not sure on how best to train. Rainy and doubletrouble always seem to give good advice when it comes to training.

Good luck, they are a fantastic family pet, but beware of their stubborness and dominance!

Re: Basic training for a Bulldog bitch

Goodvic2 - you are too kind.

Definately recommend a GOOD local training class (go and look before you sign up they are not all great) especially for a stubborn breed.

Best place to start is with Sit -take a treat place it on the end of their nose and move it back over their head towards their tail as their bum hits the floor say "sit".

Lead - Use a light puppy lead and let them drag it round the house. Once they are happy with that and relaxed pick it up and follow them about (keep it slack) then try and get them to follow you by enticing with a treat.

Come - call them to you ALL the time and treat when they come. To start crouch down from a short distance open your arms and call "dogs name" "come" in a very exciting voice. Big fuss when they do and treat.

Best treat to start with is just pieces of their dry food if they are on dry.

Great

Just googled it and couldn't find any legislation. There are lots of sites recommending dog walking for U18s as a way of earning extra cash.

I am sure someone on here will know if it is legal or not. I would post it as a new subject if i was you.
