Re: Dog Barking - how to stop it?
What happens when the dog barks? If its getting attention every time it happens, that might help explain why? Even if the attention is meant to calm or divert the barking, its still working, so barking = attention to the dog.

Re: Dog Barking - how to stop it?
i would teach her to bark on command, and then tell her either enough or quite, i tought my 2 to speak and i treat for it, i never repremand for barking cos they are barking at something weather it be a noise outside they can here far greater then us when someone is about, but as for the tv everytime he barks i would turn the TV of and say enough.

Quote:
Harry (passed away in jan) and charlie are 14 - so ummm no! Well not with the singing anyway. As to the attention - Charlie gets totally ignored, as giving them any attention does make it worse, it just never solved. I think because there were two of them doing it, and so giving each other attention! |

Re: Dog Barking - how to stop it?
What do you ask the dog to do when it does this behaviour? If you say no to a dog, you need to give them something else to do. You need to re-direct them. eg. when the barking starts, say a firm "No" and lead him to his bed. When he done this then reward him. Alternatively call him away from the tv and get him to sit then give a reward.
My dogs go mad when Dog Whisperer is on, but I am now able to tell them no and I have peace. |

When i had a dog that barked at everything..i used a empty bottle with small stones in it and shoke it when she barked ..it did the trick after a while...

Re: Dog Barking - how to stop it?
I can't watch the Paul O'grady show these days as Charlie goes mad when he sees the dog on there!! He stands right in front of the telly barking!!
I try and tell him he is being silly and 'no' but hasn't worked so far unsurprisingly!! |

Re: Dog Barking - how to stop it?
My border Collie did the same, you name it if it was an animal he growled or barked at the telly, even a stick insect has set him off before now. Some how he always knows when it is an animal.
I saw The dog Whisper a few months back with a dog with the same problem and the solution he gave worked a treat. every time your dog even shows interest in the animal on TV ie lick his lips, prick his ears, sit up, growl or bark you make a aggressive shhhht noise if this does not work then you move it up a step and touch the dog just under the ear (this is done if you hold your hand like your holding an imaginary ball in your hand with finger spread out/ or claw like and not hard but firmly touch/ gently jab the neck and quickly pull away). This imitates the pack leader going to bite or hold the dog in place (natures way)but only replicates the pack leadership of 'i am the boss and i don't like what your doing'. Repeat without fail every time he does it and 3 days into it my dog learnt that its not acceptable. its not cruel and does not need you to raise your voice smack or hurt your dog just gets you to assert your authority. Good luck |
