We just got out puppy 3 days ago he cries horribly at night we have been told not to reward him when he cries at night to play but we live in an apartment building and we have to keep him silent or risk having to give him up and i dont want that so we have to go to him to stop him which is encouraging the behavor he gets what he wants attention any ideas on how to get around this

where does your pup sleep at night? to start with to keep everyone happy it might be worth considering letting pup sleep in your room until he gets settled.

alternatively write a note to the residents in your appartment block and tell them you have a pup and you need to get him settled - so please could they bear with you whilst you get it sorted..

then when your pup next goes to bed you need to ignore him, no matter what. soon your pup will learn that he needs to settle and being noisy wont get him anywhere!

a few nights of letting him cry will benefit in the long run. Cassie settled within 3-4 nights because i totally refused to go to her. 1st night lasted 2hrs, 2nd night about 1 hr on and off 3rd night 10-15 mins.

Oscar only did 3 nights of crying too.

The best thing you can do is ignore him, but i understand your position on where you live,so you need to try and help him not cry at all. I assume your pup is very young and has just left his mum and litter mates, if so he will be lonely to help him overcome this you could try leaving a radio on quiet in his room where he is sleeping you can also try wrapping a ticking clock up in a blanket and put it in his bed area(make sure he cannot chew anything off it) wear some old clothes for as long as you can then put them in bed with him so he can smell you when you arnt there all these things should comfort him and reassure him, these things will also help when you go out and leave him.

I don't go along with the theory that you have to leave the puppies to cry.
My dogs spent the first few weeks in their crate in my bedroom, as soon as they could go all night with out waking I move the crate into the lounge, where they have slept every night since with out a sound.
If they awoke for a wee I would take them outside without talking or looking at them and return them immediately to their crates.
My thoughts are that the puppy has just lost everything familiar, so I wanted to help them go through these changes and bond with me.
Also I never left my children to cry at night and had their cots in my bedroom for the first few weeks, they all then slept in their own rooms - They were never "spoiled" so why treat the puppy any different.

Hi i no this sounds as if its straight out of a dog book but try giving him a hot water bottle and maybe a ticking clock under his blanket as this seems to settle them a bit. i agree with the people that have said let him cry as otherwise he wont learn or possibly learn something you dont want him to.

does he have toys with him at night?

he does sleep in our room
we do not use a crate
tonight will only be the 3rd night so we will be trying some of the suggestions here

good luck with it all it does take some dogs longer but he will get there in the end i had loads of trouble with my pup at night but shes fine now
