Pulling on lead - tried nearly everything!!!

Hi

We have a problem with our 9 month old Beagle. he doesn't like to go out because of roads and traffic, and we have to bribe or push him out the front door. now he loves being in the park or country side but when we take him along the roads, particularly busy roads, he pulls like mad.

i've tried everything -
- started him off with normal collar but he started pulling on that and we were worried it was damaging his neck
- so we got him a so called no-pull harness to ease the pressure from his neck but he pulled even more on it - and have since read on hear that they are no good for pulling dogs as it gives them more purchase to pull
- we got him a kumfi halti - this seemed to work the first few times we walked him with it but he has since started even pulling with that
- we have also done the stopping still if he starts to pull and turning to walk the other way - makes no difference.
- also treats can't get his attention as he's too focused on getting away from the roads

has anyone got any other solutions/gadgets/leads/ideas on how to stop him from pulling near roads

has anyone tried the harness's where the lead is attached to the chest so if they pul they spin around? anyone had any success with these? what are they called?

Hi, I do not like harnesses as it gives the dog more power to pull you as it uses its whole body, I have read what you have tried with no success and suggest you try by a jolt on the lead to the side as this breaks the concentration on going forward. Do not pull back or stop. A whistle or noise at the same time with draw the dogs attention up to you and do not use the dogs name at all.

Your dog is pulling because he is fearful of traffic - I doubt very much any kind of harness will cure that.

The root problem needs to be sorted first.

Have you had him from a young puppy?

YOu need to start from the beginning, socialising him to get used to roads etc.

Firstly go to some quiet streets where there is very little/ no traffic. Get him used to walking there.

It might even be worth investing in some good puppy classes and getting some advise there too.

good luck

Re: Pulling on lead - tried nearly everything!!!

Have you got a decent training class in your area?

My cocker spaniel has been going for 4 weeks and he is 4 months and i have been amazed at how his heel work has evolved from pulling to trotting next to me. Have you ever taught heel work from scratch?Lead in left hand, treat in right on dogs nose and walk. Gradually you should be able to stand with treat at hip level. It's hard to explain you need to see it demonstrated.

Re: Pulling on lead - tried nearly everything!!!

Hi, the harness I use is a 'walkezee harness' bought it on ebay, its really good as the chest strap is not fixed at the sides and that is where you attach the lead.
My dog is really bad puller and I have joint problems so it is really hoard for me to cope with her pulling to train her, the walkezee harness is so brilliant.

She normally will run straight to the end of the extendy lead and yank on it. On the harness she will tak her time its great.

Although, like ALL haltis, harnesses etc.. they are only meant as a training AID, not a solution. The only way you can stop your dog pulling is to teach him how you want himt to walk.

Have you had him in classes atall?

This is a good advice, especially as your dog seems to be of "rebellious" age (8-9 months, isn`t it?). And you could try a prong (or "strict") collar. You`ll have to be very careful trying that, because some dogs are scared of such collars, but I think that should not be the case with your dog, for Beagles are "persons of firm character", AFAIK.

I have the same problem with my dog! But he pulls anywhere not just on roads! I have tried pretty much everything, but nothing has changed! I currently teaching him 'heel' but it is taking ages.

Re: Pulling on lead - tried nearly everything!!!

Hi,

I agree with Lily's Mum, for whatever reason your Beagle did not get enough socialisation to traffic/loud noises during the critical socialisation period, and is therefore now fearful of traffic.

I think you will find clicker training helpful in this problem, and you can use the clicker training method to work through a program of counter conditioning and desensitization.

You'll find info on clicker training here

And info on counter conditioning and desensitization here Centre links 5th link down

Be patient, don't bribe him as you could be inadvertently feeding his fear, and don't push him.

Clicker training is fun, and you should find it will really help in building up his confidence around traffic.

For sure I think you also need to go back to basics with heel work, but you can use clicker training for this too and both you and your Beagle will find it fun.
