Lightbulb Collar training.

Hey guys,

My little crossbreed puppy, Kiba is going to have her second worming treatment soon and we have bought her a small puppy leash and collar to get her walking on the lead. It's a kinda synthetic fabric buckle collar with matching coloured leash. When we tried it on her it fit fine, and I made sure I could still fit my fingers through somewhat so it was'nt too tight.

She was fine at first because she was distracted whilst chewing on a treat, but often afterwards, she started to scratch at her neck when the collar was on her, and even when she was walking and running around she would try to scratch it!. It was funny to watch but I want to get her used to the leash and collar soon.

Should I still keep it on her even if she keeps scratching at it?. Is that normal? I have read that it can take a few hours for them to get used to a collar but I was wondering how others felt about it!.

Thanks again,

Gemma.

Re: Collar training.

She will scratch at it cos its weird to her.
Treat her when she ignores it.

Some people like to put the collar on for a half hour or so then take it off, then do it again later.
I prefer to just put the collar on at meal times for a few days 1st, then just leave it on, they do get used to it.

Re: Collar training.

for both my dogs, i have put the collar on pretty much straight away, best to get them used to it as soon as possible. baileys collar stays on 24/7 (except when hes having a bath) and he has never bothered with it at all.

Re: Collar training.

Our Cav pup had one put on him as soon as we got him home a few weeks back. It stays on except when bathing and he still has the odd scratch at it...nothing major though. The lead was trouble for him for a week or so as he kept biting it but thats stopped now...thanks to the bits of cheese we give him when trial walking me thinks!!
