Re: Help: Agression towards other dogs

Hi GIllie

Since Candy became pregnant she has become dog aggressive to unknown dogs!

she doesn't go of her lead at the moment and is on a 3 metre one i am always looking around me for other dogs when i see one i recall her in click the lead so she can't go from my side and walk.

She will slow down look and then stop i will then step bac and BLOCK her view all is fine unless the dog comes up to use. she is fine with some but fur goes up and she growls with others.

Last one was 2 rotties and a black dog i think it was a lab x. she was fine with the golden that went past us she growled at a spanial too.

IF the dog approches us i stand between them if i can't stand between i put candy between my legs and hold her there. the black lab x i took hold of his collar after asking his owner to remove him and she didn't and i stood there with candy and this other dog by the collars me between. the lab x wanted toplay candy did not. in the end i got the other owner to come and get him and she moaned about candy's behaviour i then pointed out AGAIN that candy was pregnant and has been on her toes since and thats the reason i aksed her to get him she is fine with some but not other dogs.

Saying that i have found its the male dogs she seems more aggressive towards.

Good luck
x

She probably feels fat and ugly like a lot of pregnant women and as a male made her this way she's not wanting another near her at the moment

Well I took him to training last night and there was a choc lab and a black lab, both entire and both younger than Logan. He took an instant dislike to both but was able to keep the situation under control and even got him lieing next to the black lab without growling at the end of class, so some progress was made thankfully. Just got to keep working at it.

Re: Help: Agression towards other dogs

Hey, I feel for you, my girl is unpredicatble too..... the vast majority of the time no problem at all and then she shows me up big time without warning .

I study her body language all the time and as Dundee pointed out it really does teach you a lot. I've now sussed out what is likely to trigger her dominant/aggressive streak and sadly it is smaller dogs or timid ones To get around this, without necessarily putting her on the lead, I spot a dog that may be her next 'victim' and call her back to my side, hold a tasty treat, click and encourage her to focus onto me....once the other dog has passed she gets another click and then the treat. This has been working really well for us and selma's more than happy to come trotting back to me rather than ploughing in. I'll keep doing this until I feel we've made sufficient progress

I hope your behaviourist can give you some insight into why Logan dislikes certain breeds, that's peculiar given everything you've said. Good luck!!

Re: Help: Agression towards other dogs

I find behaviour hard myself but i did wonder if you took out a pocket of treats out you could tease him away and reward him and hopefully break the habit and soon he will come to think meeting black labs means treats..... but its only an idea and i don't really know. It might break the habit?

Re: Help: Agression towards other dogs

Hi, our first dallie Ben was aggressive towards other dogs apart from Domino our other dallie and was his best buddie. We used to take them both dog training and Ben was fine with all the other dogs. Why the aggressive behaviour begn we have no idea, but whenever we saw another dog it was a nightmare trying to get him to calm down. It did improve quite alot as he got older. Now, we have the same problem with Henrie, if a dog goes past our window he goes mental and barks non-stop. Again, he never used to be like it, he always wanted to play with any dog he met. If Henrie is over the in-laws and their gradson is there with his dog, henrie will play with her and then starts to get aggressive with her. I have never heard of Dalmatians being known as an aggressive breed though. Polly

Re: Help: Agression towards other dogs

Hi there Just a suggestion ,
but have you tried using a blocking technique , When dogs display aggression towards other dogs they normally become focused on this object .
Watch his body language and if you notice a rise in his posture and a fixation in his eyes then this is when you should use a blocking technique stand in front of your dog distract him from the object and get him to sit , he may become agitated and try and Vere around you . stop him from focusing his misplaced energy .by blocking him again make him focus on you .

All this may seem abnormal for him , dogs like people continual learn and change through the years , Also a adamant change in behaviour could mean a health problem and i would suggest a visit to the vets to make sure he is still in tip top condition
Hope this help
Please remember this is only a suggestion
Have a great day The Dog master Lets Go Walkies

Re: Help: Agression towards other dogs

I always do do the blocking technique We have been back to training classes since I started this thread, and in class there are 3 labs that he does not like, 1 in particular he despises. I now have got to the point where he will ignore them and actually work in their company, and touch wood, we haven't had an incident out and about since, so think we may have nipped it in the bud.

We also reinforced who is boss. We had a new sofa so perfect opportunity to stop dogs getting on the furniture and stopping them getting on the bed, so the pecking order in our house has been restored with me and my OH being at the top again. Logan seems a much happier dog now, even if he initially didn't like not being able to get on the sofa!
