Agility For Beginners

Hi All

Im thinking of starting Pip at agility..she is a toy poodle x ckcs and was a year old in December. I just wondered what to expect from the first couple of training sessions, as I dont want to compete, just do it for fun.
Any info would be great!

Thanks

Re: Agility For Beginners

Have you started any training at home? You could set a few garden canes as jumps etc but is your dog used to jumps and things?

I am wanting to take Dill once the sessions start but thought I'd devise a plan to give him a head start so he's not too phased and overwhelmed by it all.

Start by laying a garden cane on the floor, let him sniff it and walk him over it.

Do this a few times until he gets used to the idea.

Set up the garden cane on a frame (like a jump) with it set to four inches off the ground. Let him sniff it all and walk him over it with eh "Up" or "Jump" command.

Keep raising the cane until it is at his chest level.

He'll jump for a ball or disc so it should be too hard.

Re: Agility For Beginners

Thank u...

Pip hasnt done anything like it before, although when were out walking she will jump happily over brambles!
I think it would be great as its another chance for her to socialise, gets me out and active, and would do her the world of good!

I like the idea of getting into it first though, id hate to get there on the first session and she hates poles lol!

Re: Agility For Beginners

Hi, my dads Dally Loves agility, unfortunately the local training classes shut down, so my dad bought some garden canes and built some jumps and made weaving poles..

Once Monty got a bit better they went to pets at home and bought some proper jumps and a tunnel.

Re: Agility For Beginners

Agility is a great way to entertain our dog - you dod know not to start until the dog has finished growing - which I would assume your dog would have by now.

Both dog training classes that I have attended have offered agility - guess b ecuase it is quite popular so you should not have too much of a problem finding a class.

Re the poles - you can get a set off ebay quite cheaply - I purchaged mine at a dog show about 6 month back and they cost me just over £20 for the lot.
regards
DT

Re: Agility For Beginners

we have been doing agility with our 4 yr old lab for almost a year. she was a bit hesitant at first but the experienced members came and helped us round the course until we felt a little more relaxed. we now have Millie off the lead and have even been to a show with the dog club. it has been a great way to meet new people too.

Re: Agility For Beginners

Pip is 1 year and two months now, so she is allowed to do agility.

OH has mentioned about getting some bits of equipment in the garden....im just waiting for him to say about getting flood lights too so he can be up all night with the dog practising!

Pip and I are starting obedience again in a fortnight too, and we both enjoyed that. Doggy stuff is defo great for meeting people.

Re: Agility For Beginners

millie loves her agility classes. she has made lots of new boyfriends (she's a bit of a tart) and she is much more obedient in general. we have a 9 month old pup who will be going along when he is older. We had a go on the course at his puppy classes, the sight of him oozing through the tyre like a big slug was hilarious (he is so not agile!!)
