Smile Dog Jumping On me

Hi, we have a 7 month old labrador. We have had him about a month now and have already taught him to Sit, Stay, Leave, Lay Down, Sit and wait for his Food. But there couple of problems we still have with him !!!!!! He is fine when he comes in the room and watches us do housework BUT as soon as we sit down he jumps up on settee, jumps on us and starts nipping our hands and Fingers !!!! We have tried putting Mustard on our fingers (but didn't work he just licked it off) We tell him NO but he just ignores us and carries on nipping and jumping. We put him in the kitchen if he doesn't stop (until he has calmed down and stopped jumping about) but as soon as we let him back in the room and sit back down he starts again. Please can anyone give me Advice on any ideas to try and stop him from jumping on settee and nipping ??

Re: Dog Jumping On me

My boy did this for quite a while after I first rehomed him, I think it was caused by stress.
I had to be quite firm with him in the end, as it seemed to become a habit.
Do you think that there could be something that is happening when you sit down that is stressing him?

Re: Dog Jumping On me

He thinks that the couch is his and is acting as the dominant dog if i were you i would not have him on the couch for a while and be firm with him, if you let him away with it now it will only get worse

Re: Dog Jumping On me

Quite simply tell him OFF and if he does not then make him gently by his collar. Loads of praise when he is on the floor but dont let him up.
If you Let him on the furnature then there is not a lot you can do. He needs to know that he cannot just jump on when he wants.

Smile Re: Dog Jumping On me

Thanks for the replies. He only jumps on us when we are sat down (he is fine when we walk about in the room). We have tried telling him a firm NO and also got up and walked away ignoring him, but as soon as we sit back down he starts again jumping and Nipping our fingers and hands again. We have also tried where we tell him a firm NO and give him his Raw Hide chew (but even that dont work) he just drops it after couple of mins and then comes back and carries on Nipping us !!! We dont do anything different when the dog is in the room with us we can be reading a Newspaper or book or just quietly watching tv and he just wants to nip our hands

Re: Dog Jumping On me

Keep him off the settee at all times and say NO when he chews your fingers.

You have only had him a short time and training takes longer than you think.
Just tell him what you want of him and make the commands firm and follow them through. Do not change your mind once you have made a command.

Re: Dog Jumping On me

Hi. Agree with all the previous advice. The only thing to bare in mind, is when you tell a dog no, quite often they need to do something else - this does not include a toy/bone/treat.

My dogs have a bed in the lounge. They used to misbehave when the door bell rang. They would bark and run around very excitedly. In the end we got these beds in the lounge At the same time I had to stop letting them on the sofa as they were being too dominent. Anyway, we practiced ringing and ringing the door bell and everytime making them go to their beds. Now days, they bark but on command go straight to their beds, it's worked a treat!

I think it is attention/dominence. Start by now allowing him on the sofa, if you are allowing it. When he bites your fingers, do not have a conversation with him. Tell him no and put him on his bed, if he gets up from his bed, put him back in it. He will soon learn that he is not getting any attention and there is a concequence.

Good luck
Vicky x
