MY collie and children

Hi

Im new on this site so i hope i'll find some good advice. I have had my collie cross lab for 9 years he is now 11 years old and i am expecting my first baby! I am a little concered about introducing the two of them when baby arrives. winston (the collie) has been known to snap at me and my hubby when he is sleepy or when his space is invaded he is not really a people dog, although he can be very loving. I have had some training and have baby gates in every room of the house, I have also put dog beds both down satirs and up stairs of the house so winston can get away from busy rooms or if the baby is playing on the floor in anyone room. I dont allow win to go into the babys room either.

I am worried about the introduction when baby comes and wondered if anyone has had the same problem and has managed to live happily and keep the two of them apart? I do not want to re home my dog because i love him so much he is my best friend can anyone adivse? and is it ok to keep the seperate, and not allow the dog in the same room as baby? my dog is never going to be best buudies with the baby but at least can we all live under the same roof without the two bumping into each other is that possible?

many thanks
milly

any advice welcome

Re: MY collie and children

Hi Milly. I have no experience, but I do know that the baby's scent needs to be introduced before he/she comes home. When baby is born, bring a worn baby grow back before baby comes home. Do not allow the dog to come up to the baby grow, but should sniff at a safe distance. You shouldn't allow the dog to come near the baby for a while, you'll have to judge that. I would not keep them seperate as you need to all be one pack. Ensure the dog has been exercised and is calm. Keep the dog in his bed when in the same room as baby. As said I would not allow the dog near the baby at first. Eventually the dog should learn to ignore the baby, I suppose it is at this point that you maybe able to relax. If you have any doubts then do contact a behaviourist as they will be able to help you. (make sure you have a recommendation) I have 3 rescue dogs and we are looking to start a family over the next few years. I would defo not rehome my dogs as we have had so many problems with them, which we have resolved through working with a behaviourist and I know that with the knowledge and determination that I would be able to make it work. Like you, my dogs are my best friends.

One other thing I would defo do, is walk the dog with the pram, ensuring that the dog is BEHIND the pram. This will empathise the fact that the baby is pack leader to. Daily walks with the two of them would be gr8.
Good luck I'm sure you'll be fine x
