on the lead

I think it might be early days.. I have a 15 week old staffie pup... Now the thing is altough he lets me put his lead on no probs. he also sets off ok after about 20 yards or less, he puts his bum on the deck and wont move but when i turn to go back he get up and walks back I dont want to pull him in case I hurt him!! but when will he decide to move furher as Im getting no where. Ive tried standing there for 5 mins til hes ready but he never seems to be.. thats why I requested dog classes on another thread

Re: on the lead

Hiya,i have exactly the same problem with my english bull terrier,he,s now 1 year old,but early on he would walk fine on the lead but the last couple of months we,ll get to the corner of the road and he,ll just put his brakes on and not move,i tried treats and toys but still no joy,we end up going back home which he obviously wants to do,sorry i can,t suggest anything as i,m trying to solve this problem out aswell.Lets hope they sort themselves out eventually.

Re: on the lead

Try taking some really good tasty treats with you, and put him on an extending lead.. (not a cheap little one, you need a good long one for this to work).
Being so young he will only let you get so far away before feeling the need to be closer, so once he sits down, encourage him to come in a realy enthusiastic voice, maybe even with a squeaky toy.
As soon as he starts to come, give lots of praise, if he comes all the way to you keep him interested with toy/treat.

If he's sat down and you give in its letting him know he's won.. but if you make it uncomfortable for him, he wont like walks..

So just try to keep it Fun, and remember, lots of Praise!

Hey, as your dog is a bit older and already knows how to walk on the lead, It sounds like he is just being stubborn! Lol
With a bully, letting him get his own way could lead to bigger problems, thinking he's the boss..
Try a different collar, or harness. And when he stops just give him a tug towards you giving the command you use (come or heel or whatever). Any step he does take (even if its only one) give him heaps of praise.

Have you tried going a different route? Dogs like variety like us humans too.. or maybe break the walk up by going by a park and having a play session?
