Runaway hound

Weve had sammy since 2005 we took him from a then friend who hated dogs and got him for her daughter, but sam a cav king charles x terrier, wasnt house trained, he chewed, and was never walked so he would dig his way out their garden.

He was 1 at the time, so we gave them a rabbit in exchange for him and bought him home, he was fairly agressive to start but soon got better although the toilet training took a good year and we still have problems.

He is now 4 and the major issue is escaping, any tiny hole he will get through, he even jumps out of an open window if its wide enough. we did live somewhere where it was field all around so OH used to let him run freely with another residents dog, however we cannot do that now living near a road but he still trys.
Even if I am standing at the door he will push past and run, he always comes back but he has no road sense and its dangerous for him to be out.

He is walked twice a day, he has poo issues where he will not go if he thinks someone is looking or something catches his attention, it can take him 2 days of holding it in and sometimes he will go in the house because he cannot hold on, but still refuses to go if we take him out or even tie him on a long rope outside.

The biggest problem is if our other dog is out with him he will take him on a v long run, they get lost and its such a worry, it hasnt happened a lot and our lab is very well behaved but it only takes one of those times where your back is turned for a millisecond for them to go.

So anyway suppose Im after tips to get him to be more obedient, and listen to us, Id love to have him out with the other dog in the garden without having to watch thier every move in case they escape.

Its no problem when Im aware but I need advice on training so that I don't have to keep following him around or possibly have him off the lead.

Re: Runaway hound

Youv'e got two stubborn breeds in there!! and hell of a challenge But he can be trained.

We took on an untrained whippet who was a little sod indoors and out and we had similar problems. Luckily we have a friend who is a qualified and certified dog trainer and behaviourist who is accreditied by the KC, and went to her for advice.

Is he neutered?? If not get him neutered. this willtone down some of the behaviour.

No dog should push passed you in a door way for instance or run away and come to recall. It sounds like he is dominating you. His training starts at home in the house.

To start to make progress make the ground rules at home. No sitting on sofas, beds, provide a floor blanket. If you go out make it impossible for him to get on the sofas by putting large items on there. Keep your bedroom door closed at all times, and no feeding before you or off your plate or out of cups. feed him his food after you have had yours!! No walking through doors before you. Call him back and make him sit. priase him if he immediately sits with a treat. Tell him to wait.Make sure he stays there and walk through the door and call him, If he comes treat him again
Take a look at his diet and make sure it is a balance diet with not too high protein levels (12-14% ok) as this will make him hypo. don't keep changing his food.
Make sure he is fed and walked at a regular times ,on lead for now, and not fed too late in the evening.
If someone is at the door shut him in a room so he cannot run out into the road.
.
Start using basic obedience training with him. Praise for good behaviour with a small pocket treat, but donot shout at him or reward for bad, as he will be getting the attention he wants. Do not hit your dog under any circumstances it does no good and will put fear into him masking him more disobedient.
Dogs like to know where they stand in a pack and are naughty if they are confused with their ranking.
Make sure all the family follow the rules .You have to train him as you would a spoilt child.
This will not happen over night but it is a start. From indoor obedience you can then take the training onto the field on a long 6-8ft extention lead and do you recalls there. Do not attempt to let the dog off until you have his full attention.
You can get into serious trouble if your dog is not under control in a public place, If he is running off, he could cause a road accident and you could be in trouble.
In the garden you can use a item called GET OFF! crystals or spray which has an odour which will deter him from the fence and flowerbeds.

Re: Runaway hound

completey agree with last reply. I would recommend a book called the dog listener as she explains the process of becoming a pack leader in a way which most dog owners can relate to. Your CKCS thinks he is the pack leader hence his behavour, a pack leader will lead and the rest of the pack should follow [from a dogs view] so if you become the pack leader it will be you CKCS who will be the follower and stop trying to lead. Also getting him neutered will help. would stronly suggest though you read that book, it will help you understand why he is the way he is, you dont get naughty dogs, just mis-understood.

Re: Runaway hound

Your right about the stubborness I have been making him sit back from the door when opening it, he hasnt been able to run off for over a week, and hes starting to go to the toilet when walked now over the last few days.

But hes still got that look of Im going and starts trying to sneak through the hedges lol

Will keep on with the training

Re: Runaway hound

Its working!

Today the door came open, (think it was on latch whilst i was bringing in furniture) and i got back and instead of him running out he was sat behind it waiting.

Also he now asks for the toilet and is going almost everytime we take him out now
