Calling All Housetraining Experts!

We're getting a 17 week old pup this saturday, she's never had a home. We're crating her and we're training her to go outside (forgetting all that puppy pad newspaper business)... so I've read up alot, and think I have it covered... but I have a few questions, so I'm going to say what I plan to do, and my queries, and if anyone can correct me if necessary, and answer the queries, I'd be so grateful!

-I watch the puppy... if she looks like she wants to go, I take her outside and say "potty". I wait with her. If she doesn't go, I put her in her crate for 10 minutes, then try again. If she still doesn't go, I repeat the process until she does. If she does go, I make a fuss of her and give her a treat.

Correct?

-If she doesn't look like she wants to go at anytime while I'm watching her, I put her out every hour and say "potty".

Question: What if at this time, she doesn't need to go? if I crate her for 10 minutes and she's not even needing to pee, I'm wasting mine and her time, right?

-If I catch her mid-pee, I make a noise to distract her (like a clap), say "no" and take her outside, say "potty" and wait with her.

Question: What if she was done? If she's finished then crating her for 10 minutes is pointless, right? Do I then wait another hour from that time?

-If I miss her peeing in the house and she's done already, I don't react - just clean it up and deodorise. I don't take her outside because she's done.

Correct?

Question: If she was due to go out in say 30 minutes from when she has her accident, do I wait another hour seeing as she's relieved herself?

General Questions

Is every hour right or too often, or not often enough? I worry about this because if it is too often, then crating her for 10 mins if she doesn't go could result in her being in her crate all day!!

Is crating her for 10 minutes if she doesn't go, the right thing to do? I read you could just put her back inside and watch her, but that crating works better as she won't pee in her bed.

Once she's housetrained, can I take her to family and friend's houses and expect her to be clean?

THANK YOU to anyone who replies

Re: Calling All Housetraining Experts!

Hi i think you've got the right idea.

If she doesnt pee when you take her outside, you are not wasting time, as you woundn't know if she did need to go or not. I say ite better to take her out too amny times rather than not enough, then you are getting her out before she pees rather than the possibilty of an accident.

When she has an accident you should still take her outside just incase she was not finishd, also it will still give her the idea to go out.

If she cries in her crat it could mean she needs to pee.. take her out then put her straight back in, if you take her to pee then play with her (when shes cried in the crate) she will learn that crying gets her out. This will also help teach her to ask to go out to pee.

Once you think shes got the hang of it you can start taking her to other peoples houses, but take the crate too.. then take the potty training backa few steps... as so far she will have learned that its not ok to pee in YOUR house, but to her, other peoples houses are different..
its like when you train a dog to sit- she may sit everytime at home, but you need to take her different places so she learns to do it no matter where the environment.

And yes, I would say crating her for 10 mins if she doesnt go is right.. then keep taking her out until she does go.
Also remember, puppies (even this age as shes not been trained) need to go out immediately after sleep, play and id say 15 mins after eating/drinking.

Good luck with your new pup

x
