Sleep? What's that?? :-/

Hi all.

My partner Jan and I have hardly slept in the last month since we bought Charlie our Border Collie Pup. He is now approx 13 weeks old and every night we try to leave him to sleep in a large make-shift cardboard kennel in the Dining Room (containing a doggie bed, sheets and toys), he starts howling after 2-3 hours. One of us ends up getting up and staying up in the early hours of the morning, usually 3am! We really don't know what to do. I have thought that maybe we should just try and ignore him and maybe he will go back to sleep, but he might be disturbing the neighbours.

Can anyone offer any advice. This is the first time we've had a Pup!

The little Monkey...

He is adorable

Have a quick word with your neighbours about Charlie and any noise ... im sure they'd understand , people are generally nicer if they feel they are being thought of , lol

As for your pup , have patience with him
he's still a baby and probably needs to go outside for a wee. My Gypsys 16 weeks now , she just about manages going from 1am til 7am now in her crate (id invest in a crate if I were you , those things can be a godsend)

MissyMe:

Thanks. He definitely is a cutey, WHEN he behaves himself! lol.

Crazybones & Mese:

We do let him out etc, but I think he just wants to be where I am! I think he now sees me as the pack leader, or a sucker! He follows me everywhere now. We haven't got a crate, but we have got a large doggie pen for him. I had to fix a make-shift roof on it as he climbs out like someone climbing a ladder! He really is too intelligent. Mind you, whatever he does, I still love him to bits.

Re: Sleep? What's that?? :-/

Not that im biased at all , lol , but you've picked the most intelligent breed as your pet
My Toffee , somehow , managed to open his crate door the other day ... no idea how and he hasnt done it since , im wondering now if I shut it properly

anyhow , dont let him get into the habit of telling you what to do ... I think its just a case of plowing through and ignoring the yelps and whines for a few nights (make sure he doesnt need the toilet obviously , but dont hang around when hes done)
Its hard to do I know , I felt incredibly guilty hearing her whine and not going to her (plus I felt sorry for Toff , their crates are in the same room) , but after 4 days she settled at night and now, as I said, will go from 1am to 7am quite happily

One tip I got was leave one of your t-shirts with him in his bed ... it didnt make much difference with Gypsy but it may for your Charlie

Maybe Try leaving the radio on over night to, that tends to work, coz they can hear 'someone' in the house and feel there not alone.

Hi we have just been through this and to be honest the only way is to ignore him. I know it is hard but the neighbours will be thankfull in the end. We put the radio and he had a big soft toy. This did not stop untill my husband finally realised he was doing a owner recall lol. If he whines we tell him no and he just goes back to bed. Believe me it was not like that at the begining, we brought our neighbours a box of chocs and explained what we were doing. Hope this helps

Re: Sleep? What's that?? :-/

Firstly - WOW what a cutie.
I love collies, just don't have the energy to own one myself

As said by others I would speak to the neighbours and ask them to bear with you for a week or so, and to let you know if it is to disturbing, definately take a box of choccies to show your appreciation.
If that doesn't work try letting him sleep in your room in his crate until he can go all night, them gradually move the crate back into the dinning room - I did this with my 2 and they slept downstairs afer a couple of weeks.

A BIG thanks to all of you. What fantastic advice!
We will definitely be trying out all of your suggestions tonight.
Fingers crossed!

Got a little radio ready and one of my t-shirts. ( I wonder if that will be in one piece in the morning? lol )

By the way, I love all your doggie pics too. Been having a nosey. Don't we all have some beautiful doggies? Mese, I've looked at your Gypsy on your blog, isn't she lovely.

Charlie's had his first look at 'rain' tonight. I opened the back door to our garden for him to have a wee, and he just sat at the door staring out at the awful weather. lol. Bless him ay?
