Re: recall tips?
HI just to let you know be careful of long leads on large dogs. I took our old ridgeback out with a long lead and they can get up quite a momentum in 20 ft and it was all I could do to stay on my feet and keep my arm attached to my body It is hard to keep them strolling at a distance. I am not saying don't use one but if you do try not to let him run or you could find yourself following rather quickly behind him. A good thing to do once his recall is a little better is try hiding from him, hopefully this will teach him to look up for you occasionally try running with him not for a long time but just do a couple of mins then change direction, this should make him concentrate on you a little more and the more he looks at you reward him with either a vocal reward or a treat. The more you can encourage him looking at you and that you are quite good fun to be around the better. when you are out call him back just for a treat, sometimes they just assume you are going to put them on a lead. He is also starting the "puberty" phase so he is just pushing the boundries a little. If he was good in the past that would indicate it might just be a bit of a phase. Also just practice in the house carry treats in your pockets wait for him to be really engrossed or when he is least expecting it in something and call him with a reward.
