my older dog who is 8 years old really dislikes our new puppy who is 15 weeks old.The puppy wants to play and chase him but he just barks at her and runs away and also snarls at the puppy.dont know how to get them to get on with each other.

we have had the pup since she was 7 weeks old.i thought the older dog would have got used to the pup by now.I have tried playing with them both together giving them treats together dont know what else to do.The pup chases older dog around garden and older dog is just barking.

Re: older dog does not like puppy

i think u shud let the older dog get some time to himself, puppys can tire older dogs out, and then they can get annoyed.

abit like us and kids we need our rest

pup is kept away from older dog a lot because of this problem. Its so strange because if the older dog hears the pup running around downstairs with us he comes down himself but it all goes mad then with the pup chasing him and him barking

Re: older dog does not like puppy

Has the older dog got a routine - times of the day when he just wants to lay around and times when he's up for a play?
When Lilly was a tiny pup (well even now sometimes) her hyper moments didn't always match up with Zippers and she would bark and jump at him. He would sit there and howl
I had to take Lilly into another room and train and play with her, and once she was old enough take her for a 10min walk.
Sounds like when the older dog starts stuff it's Ok but he hasn't got the patience when the pup initiates play. I would continue taking the pup away when he is hyper for now and praising your older dog when he is quiet.
Hopefully as the pup calms down a bit they will begin to get on better.
Don't know what else to suggest - sorry
