Car Chasing

My female german shepherd has for some reason now started to try and chase cars ( she's always on lead ) she doesn't do it during the day just at night and then its only cars that are coming from behind her and only if they have full beam headlights on (strange i know), i am trying to stop this problem asap cause of the safety for her and drivers if she happened to get out/get off lead etc (accidents can happen) has anyone else had this problem with there dog/s and have solved it

Re: Car Chasing

Yes. My RR used to try and leap at / chase the odd vehicle. Diesel vans at any time, lots of cars when very wet and the tyres were noisy, cars at night going away from us (like yours).

I bought a front clip harness (don't use it anymore) for total control should he leap first of all. Then I essentially spent a fair bit of time by a few busy - ish roads in the wet, at night and in the day. I found the distance at which Kilo would be interested in vehicles but not leap and spent some time first standing still and treating when he looked at a 'trigger vehicle', then walking and treating when he looked at one and worked our way closer and closer.

We can now walk on a loose lead alongside a road without worry.

Exactly the same as Kilo used to be....never bothered for the first part of a walk then all of a sudden did it. I used to wonder if he coped for so long, then became overwhelmed although didn't show any signs of anxiety prior to starting. Also, once he had tried to leap at one vehicle, he would try them all unless I got him back a good distance from the road.

Re: Car Chasing

Bel doesnt show any signs of stress etc when they are going past (and i know her signs really well as she aint keen on new people in the home) and she will sometimes just watch them go by but then for no reason she will just try and chase them, i think am gonna try your tips for a few weeks and see how it goes from there, fingers crossed it will stop

Once I got the timing right it stopped very quickly, so hopefully it will work for you too.
