puppy toilet training?

hello im just wondering if anyone can help please?
we rescued a puppy collie last sunday, they said she was about 14 weeks old (to be confirmed at the vets tuesday,if they will see us this week) she seems to be paper trained for weeing but she is just pooping everywhere and because of the change of food she has got very bad runs (shes now on rice and boiled chicken and scrambled egg)
when i see her doing it i go pick her up and put her on the paper but then she wont carry on then messes again not long after.
is there anything i can do to try and get her to poop on the paper while shes not allowed out?
thank you in advance xxxxxx

To be honest Ive never used paper or pads, I think it can just confuse things,
as its just giving the message that its Ok to go in the house, then after you have to re-train them all over again to go outside and it just takes longer.
If you have a secure garden then to be honest she should be fine.

I took mine out in the garden every 30/45 minutes, when they started to go I gave it a word, used every time they get to associate the word with going, so later you can use it as a toilet cue and get them to toilet on demand in most cases. When finished then lots of praise and give a treat. They usually especially need to go after drinking, eating, play and sleeping so take her out then too. If she has an accident dont tell her off, it can make them nervous about going in front of you so more likely to try and sneak off to do it. Make sure you use pet stain/odour remover as any smells left can encourage them to repeat in the same areas. Look out for circling scratching and sniffing about the floor, thats usually a sign they are looking to go, although you dont sometimes see that until they are a little older, sometimes when younger they dont always realise they need to go or realise too late.

At night I slept down stairs for the first couple of weeks and took mine out when they woke or stirred. Over the two weeks it became less and less until after about 2 weeks maybe a little longer they were going through until morning. Some people crate train and have pup sleeping in their bedroom and do it that way. If you dont want to do either you can set an alarm and pop then out once or twice in the night that way. I know some people just use the paper at night, but again it does tend to take longer overall to get them completely clean and I think it just confuses them, you are taking them out all day and then basically telling them its OK to go it in the house again allbeit on paper. It is a lot of work doing it this way for the first two or maybe 3 weeks, but overall it certainly pays off Ive found.

At the moment it is going to be harder as she has an upset tum, they often get like that with just the stress of relocating to a new home, and also sudden abrubt changes of food can do it too, so with both going on at once that is probably the cause.

If you really cant start with the outside toileting for some reason, all I can think of is loads and loads of paper, maybe in the kitchen, and take her out there instead of the garden on a regular basis and do everything else as above. At the moment obviously you can only use the chicken probably for rewards. You will as said though have to do the whole thing again after to get her to toilet in the garden.

Re: puppy toilet training?

thank you for your reply
i always thought they couldnt go outside till after their full course of injections, but if its fine to take her in the garden i might try that, well once the snow has melted abit now coz she will proberly disapear in the snow at the moment
she doesnt really mess at night, she did mess the first night we had her and thats it,nothing since, she saves it all for the day, which is a good thing
she does sniff round when she needs to go,thats when i was taking her to the paper,so will look out for that and take her outside, and boil some more chicken as treats untill her tummy is better
thank you again for your help

Re: puppy toilet training?

I also rescued a collie pup five weeks ago. Mine was 11-12 weeks old. She also had runny poo/diarrheoa which didn't clear, even after using ProKaolin, so necessitated a trip to the vets for antibiotics.

Obviously if they have diarrheoa then they are going to poo frequently and it sure won't help the toilet training. My little lady poo'd in her crate for the first three nights, simply because she couldn't help it. She was also peeing on the Vetbed in her crate instead of the newspaper at the other end, again simply because she thought that's where she was supposed to do it.

Happily 5 weeks on, after being consistent with taking her outside to toilet and very vigilant inside, she is totally clean in the house both day and night, although of course I can expect the odd accident.

HTH

Its completely fine for her to go in the garden, its just taking her out in public places you should avoid, where other possibly unvaccinated dogs are and also dog poop, viruses such as parvo can be passed on in a number of ways but usually through infected faeces and soil so if you do take her out in public you need to keep her off the ground until she's fully vaccinated....it is actually a good idea to take her out in public places though because it helps with early socialisation, all those new sights, sounds and smells! Just do it carefully thats all

Feel free to post some piccies of your little one!
