6 month old goldie with bad stomach

We have been to the vests 3 times now with Molly. She has intermittent squits maybe 2 days on then 2 days off. She has had blood tests and fecal samples but it has thrown up nothing. She always has a slightly raised temp but nothing else. She was on a diet of chicken and rice for 3 weeks and still had it. Vets are convinced it is to do with her food but it cleared up for 10 days when she had the antibiotics. Plus I'm positive whatever the issue is is making her more aggressive as she totally stopped when the antibiotics 'cured' her. If anyone else has gone through this and has any advice please help.

P.s she was on beta puppy, now wainwrights dry food.

has she been like it since you got her, or is it something that occured after?
Did they do a 3 day fecal test, 3 different samples taken on 3 consequetive days? Sometimes thats better as you can miss things in just one small portion of one sample.

There are lots of things that can cause tum upsets in pups, including intestinal parasites such as worms, and also protozoan parasites like giardia
and coccidia, normal wormers dont usually do the protozoan parasites although panacure paste does do the giardia, you have to do a longer course though then you would with just a standard worming.

You can get nasty bacterial infections too, that need specific and/or a prolonged course of antibiotics camplobacter is one.

Im just wondering if you havent already, wether it would be worth trying her on one of the more natural wet foods, that are just basically meat, vegetables and a small amount of rice.

Re: 6 month old goldie with bad stomach

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes we have had her 4 months and it has generally been the same since we have had her. The breeder hasn't had any other problems with the other pups, so she says.

She has had 3 fecal samples taken, a general blood test and an intestinal blood test. She has been moved on to wainwrights dry junior food for 10days and she has turned loopy again. What I don't understand is she is fine one day and not the next. The vets just say we should move onto their special food for 6 weeks and see how it goes! I would have thought they would be able to give us a definite answer by now as to what is causing it. Can u recommend any foods? Thanks

Nature diet is good, it is high meat content, vegetables and a small amount of rice a lot of dogs have done well on that if they have had iffy tums, Theres nothing artificial at all in it colour or preservatives wise.

What has helped to settle a lot of dogs iffy tums too is a supplement bionic biotic Probiotic for Dogs | Dog digestion / skin + coat supplement | Pooch and Mutt
See link for details, Pets at home are selling that now as well as ordering it direct from pooch and Mutt.

If you want to check out nature diet here is the link for that too
Naturediet

For Dry I did use Natural Dog food Company dried for awhile with one of mine as a pup, that was good and Ive also mentioned it to somone whols dog had digestive problems and it worked on theirs. If you want to check that out
The Natural Dog Food Company … where good health comes naturally

I have used Natures Menu tinned recently that all natural with nothing added either, ive also use the complete raw frozen blocks in the past too. All there ranges are high meat content, and nothing artificial too.

Re: 6 month old goldie with bad stomach

Had similar probs with Marty as a pup, changed him to a raw diet and no probs ever since. That was seven years ago and all the dogs here are raw fed. Some are just intolerant of certain additives in commercial food, especially grains. With a raw diet you know exactly what goes into the dog and you also know there are no grains or additives in it.

Re: 6 month old goldie with bad stomach

I went through all these tests with my rough nothing showed up the vet wanted to do some invasive tests but I thought its got to be diet. So I took him off all the protein he had before ( yes we even tried the Hills ) I found out he has an allergy to chicken and most vets say put the dog on this diet. He now has fish and potato and he has been well now for 3 years no further problems. Hope you get your dog sorted as you do want to cheer when they do a solid poop.

Re: 6 month old goldie with bad stomach

Hi!

The best complete food i have found that stops an upset tummy is WainWrights Salmon and Potato. My dogs have been on it since puppies and it has worked wonders! My 12 week old puppy had an upset tummy (she was been fed on Eukanuba which the breeder provided) and after gradually moving her onto WainWrights she has been fine ever since and having normal poos!

Hope this helps.

Re: 6 month old goldie with bad stomach

Hi there, I had a similar problem years ago with one of my dogs and it turned out he had an intolerance to red meat and red meat fats which is used in most dog foods. I tentatively tried Fish4dogs complete foods (my vet nurse recommended) and it was fantastic so have been feeding this ever since and never looked back. ~They also do a salmon mousse which is gentle and easily digestible. Whatever direction you go in just make sure that you choose something very digestible which is going to have a dominant ingredient of either white fish or chicken. Check out the ingredients of everything. Some dogs have an intolerance to rice too so potato is a good carb source. Some chicken diets are smothered in red meat fats. If you just want to try your dog on a sample contact the company and ask for a small sachet. These diets are expensive for the really good ones and theres nothing worse than spending loads and discovering it doesnt suit.
