Messing in home

We have just acquired our second rough collie blue merle, called Jack. He is approaching two years of age, and came form a home where he spent most of his time in doors.

Our problem. Even though he has the freedom of a large garden, and two long walks a day, he is messing in one particular spot in our Lounge almost on a daily basis. So far it has only happens when he is let out first thing in the morning for his toilet. He has a wee, but then comes straight back and does a mess.

Obviously we are doing our utmost to stop him, but he still manages to do it.

Apart from this he is the most adoring and loving dog you could ever own.

I would appreciate some guidance, hopefully more than just rub his nose in it!!

Re: Messing in home

Beautiful boy!

Does he only do one a day? Or after that he goes in the garden? It could be he that he doesnt like it because its cold, or perhaps at his last house he was trained to go on gravel and so wont go on grass (something along those lines)

I would go back to puppy training basics; taking him out all the time and not letting him back in until he's done his business. I normally give it a name, IE 'Toilet' and when he starts going say 'Toilet, toilet, toilet, GOOD BOY!' and eventually you can use it as a command. If he'll go on a lead, you could take him out with a lead on until he goes.

Im sure you have, but I would give that spot a really good clean (pref with bleach) so that there arnt any traces of smells which might make him want to go there.

Re: Messing in home

Thanks for your reply Dober. Much appreciated.

To date he has only messed once a day in the house, & seems to go OK after that in the garden, but never seen him mess on a walk.

Obviously spot thoroughly cleaned, but bleach on a carpet....sorry cannot oblige!!

The last owner was a breeder, and Jack was kept in doors all day, and yes, I do not think he saw any grass, but only solid areas. I will check this out with her.

Re: Messing in home

That should be relatively easy to resolve if he's only doing it once a day and always in the same place.

Simply let him out into the garden and then when he goes into the lounge be diligent and when he shows signs of circling etc. say something like 'toilet' and get him outside quickly. Obviously loads of praise and a tit-bit when he's had a poo.

My rescue pup accidently had a poo on the green mat just inside the front door earlier this week and then a few hours later did it again. OH response was "Oh great, her toilet training is going backwards....." but I personally think it was clever. She couldn't get out so had chosen as close to the outside as she could and the nearest thing that resembled grass. I was just vigilant for a couple of days and she's fine again now.

Re: Messing in home

Why not go out with him and praise when he `goes`? And stay there till he does. He`ll soon get the idea.

Re: Messing in home

Can you not put something on or around the spot the dog uses so he can't get to it. Maybe saying no when he goes to smell there. Lovely looking dog though and with their brains I am sure he will get the idea in the end.

Re: Messing in home

found this home made dog pee/poop area cleaner and it does work, you need the following..
baking soda
white vinegar
washing detergent ( bio is better )
3% hydrogen peroxide..
mix 50% white vinegar with 50% water
when dry sprinkle baking soda over
mix half a cup of the hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of washing detergent and poor over baking soda leave for a little time and clean off and use something like newspaper to blot dry

i would have to agree bleech on carpet is a no go anyway but the problem with most cleeners they contain ammonia which can make the dog go there again, even just using the vinegar and baking soda is great
