Re: Sasha has chewed the carpet again
spoil sport
![]() sorry, i don't agree with crate training is she going for a bit because there's a thread sticking up which she can pull on? has she got lots of toys to play with so she doesn't get board when you're out? the only bit of carpet which has suffered from my two where were is had already started coming up, there's normally a reason they go for the bits they do go for, keep your eye out |

Re: Sasha has chewed the carpet again
The only way to stop this happening is not setting her up to fail (you are currently setting her up to fail by leaving her with access to chew the carpet).
One such way of doing this would be getting her an sufficiently large and comfortable crate (so that she can stand and walk around in it, with clip on water bowls, suitable toys, nice comfy bedding, kongs and games to keep her occupied if needed etc). You say you don't like crate training? ![]() I have two rescue dogs, who are crated for short periods when needed (in the car, overnight for one etc) and have access to their crates throughout the day and choose to go and settle down in their crates. The crates are their "safe spaces", have been incredibly useful for teaching them to have downtime and chill and they are happier for having them. ![]() If you won't consider a crate, you need to think about some other way of confining her so that she cannot chew the carpet. A large secure puppy pen. Stair gates restricting her to a non-carpeted room? Think about why she is chewing? Is she anxious due to being separated from her people? Is she bored? This will help you determine further action you can take (systematic counter-conditioning to being left vs... kongs, activity toys- "offswitch"/relaxation protocol training) to prevent the behaviour reoccurring.

That way they can proactively train theri dog how to behave in a way that wwill make its owner happy. Happy owners equals happy dogs in my experince. So ask yourself the questions.... When you go out of the house and leave your dog alone in it (as we all have to abd I beieve should do) then what is it that you want your dog TO DO whilst you are gone? How would you like your dog to fill his time whilst you are gone? When you have decided on your answer then the solution is usually more obvious. Let us know how you get on. Good luck Denise ![]() |

Re: Sasha has chewed the carpet again
WOW! Big doggy
I think if they have the run of the hall/kitchen and lots of toys and nibbles and STILL chewing the stair carpet, there must be a reason? But I am not sure what - I only have experience of one of our dogs doing this and he was extremely anxious (he took chunks out of the dining room chairs and table!)I know you said he was out in the garden for 2 hours and then a 30 minute walk - would it be worth walking him for longer to really tire him out? I know he will be playing in the garden and sniffing around but maybe a longer walk may tire him out more? I'm not an expert on big dogs (having only Yorkies). Hope you figure it out - I know the cost of a chewer!

Re: Sasha has chewed the carpet again
OK fine that's your decision. You'll have to buy new carpet then because once they start on something like that, they'll keep on doing it. Lets hope your puppy doesn't start on electric cables whilst your out. Somewhere between 8 and 14 months old is always the worse chewing stage in any case, in when the adult teeth are settling into the jaw and the pups need to chew. |
