(2). Unfortunately, as I stated before confining/restricting the dog's access to the area where she can chew is the only way to stop her chewing.

She isn't going to be worried about being confined to one room whilst you are out. Microanalysis and such is a human trait not a canine one

As stated by others it is your choice, but it is probably safer IMO to restrict her access and thus avoid her chewing as well as the risk of veterinary costs due
to ingestion of carpet etc...

But surely restricting her to the kitchen area when she is used to a large space is just going to encourage her to eat my cupboards ?.

I found all the bits of the carpet so she hadn't swallowed it

If the chilli doesn't work I will give the Tabasco a try

I would have said the same before having Rupert. Trusting him loose in the house would have been horrendously expensive for us and downright dangerous for him. He wasn't worried by being left, he just enjoyed chewing and apparently my furniture, doors, walls etc were much more enjoyable than any chew toy or stuffed kong

You do need to prevent your dog from practising the habit if you're going to break the habit. Blocking her access in some way to the area she is chewing would be my first step. Whether that's by crating, putting her in a different room or finding a way to block it so she simply can't get to it. I never had any luck with Rupert and the anti chew stuff, the reward of chewing was enough to negate the unpleasant taste. The two I had before Rupe were always confined to the living room when left. Comfy beds and some toys and they were fine with that, they didn't need the full run of the downstairs.

Hello Sarah . I agree with Sarah1983. I would also add that in my view dogs that eat raw bones are a lot les likely to chew houses or parts of houses. It is my belief that dogs are DESIGNED to eat bones in the same way that I was designed to marry Hugh Jackman..... becasue they (I) dont get chance, they (I) get frustrated. Does your dog have access to bones on a regular basis. bones have a naturally calming effect on dogs, tire out their jaz and facial muscles and they keep theeth in tip top conditiont. Breaking the carpet chewing habit is best achieved by limiting the access to the carpet, but often the need to chew will just go elsewhere, fridge, cupboard etc.... unless the need to chew is fulfilled by something liek a bone or a type of chew that the dog really really enjoys chewing. Good luck. Denise x

Rupert had bones regularly and they stopped him gnawing on the woodwork. Didn't do a thing to stop him tearing things into tiny little pieces though. So I gave him things he could shred. Toilet roll tubes, empty food boxes, the cardboard boxes deliveries came in etc. I tried hiding treats in screwed up newspaper stuffed into the boxes and tubes but he'd leave the food and just lie there shredding paper and cardboard. Meant I had to pick up lots of bits of cardboard but it mostly stopped him shredding things I cared about. However, 2 days before he died he unwrapped all my Christmas presents and left his teeth marks in a box set of books my hubby had bought me.

Glad blocking the bottom stair seemed to work. Not sure about chilli etc wouldn't be very nice & might make them sick - or alternatively might even like it and encourage chewing!

The stag bars are pretty good for long term chewing

I put chilli powder on the corners of my chairs and table - didn't stop our dog taking big chunks out of them!
