I've only got my clicker on Saturday and my dogs focus is so much better, we're currently working on lying down at a distance and "look at me" but after watching some of your video's i'm going to stop putting a command to "look at me" and just turn it into an established behaviour

Out of interest, what breed is Bates? He looks like a great dane X, he's so lovely!!! His chest markings are very similar to my Tummels(labxrottieXridgeback) but his build is really different, he's definately a stunning dog though

Can i ask what treats you use? Tummel can't focus with cheese as it's just too high value(if he smells cheese he does every trick in his repetoire while barking furiously), i've currently been using small pieces of bread which he also loves but doesn't go nuts for.

Re: 100% obedience achieved by clicker training ONLY?

Hi ballybee
From what we can tell, Bates is probably mostly boxer with some lab. I also have danes, and really not much about him says “dane” to me. Plus he looks like a tiny-toed midget next to them

I love having a default attention, though its still perfectly fine to have a verbal cue as well. Generally I simply say the dog’s name for that.

I use pretty much anything for treats. Lowfat mozzarella is a staple, cut up hot dogs and lunch meat (though that’s more sparing because of the high sodium and spices etc.), leftover chicken is another staple. We also have tiny crackers here called “goldfish” that I buy by the truckload for the kids too, and they’re the perfect size for dogs as big as mine. Word of caution about treats though - softer treats tend to go down easier especially when you’re having the dog move a lot. Nothing like being in a good “groove” only to have to stop so the dog can cough the treat out of his gullet and back down the right pipe.

If your guy is overexcited about treats, its definitely worth the investment to put some time in to impulse control exercises so you can use high value treats and still maintain focus on the handler, not the food.

Thanks for all the kind words about Bates!

Maybe you could try cocktail sausages? Bella loves them and they can be kept in the fridge opened for long.
