when can I walk him?

My puppy is 16 weeks old and I was told by the breeder not to walk him at all until he was 6 months old. The problem with this is that he has so much energy and is therefore playing up and having constant zoomies round the house. Each day he seems to be gaining more and more energy and therefore is getting worse and worse in the house.
Has anyone else heard of this 6 month rule? I have never done this before with any of my dogs and am finding it hard to keep him entertained. I was told this is due to his legs etc developing properly by keeping him in. He goes out in the garden every day but this is not enough for him.

Re: when can I walk him?

I have 2 large breed dogs and i was never told that with my two, I know you have to be careful when u walk pups i.e how much off lead exercise they get etc if he's 16 weeks you should be giving him about 25/30 mins off lead exercise i think (maybe wrong though )
As long as he has all his injections he'll be fine x

Re: when can I walk him?

The rule of the thumb is 5 mins per month of age so at 5 months a pups should be having 25 mins exercise.

Re: when can I walk him?

Hiya x I have never heard of anything daft in my life someone telling you not to walk a puppy until he or she is 6 months old xx
I have all my 4 dogs since they have been 10 weeks old, the youngest at the moment is 17 weeks old xx
Once she had all her jags she was able to start going out for wee walks round the park on and off the lead - she is a Springer Spaniel and if i was told not to walk her until she was 6 months old then i would be driven daft by now as she is so excitable and has lots of energy. I let Mya out often at the moment as she is still young xx
The best thing you can do is to get him or her out for a walk 25-30mins and let him burn off some of his energy xx

Re: when can I walk him?

Why where you told 6 month??? - once the vacs have been given you are ok I believe after around 12 weeks! BUT - to much exercise can be bad for his young bones whilst he is still growoing - think there is something about 5 minutes per month of age - i'e six months 30 minutes max - cpild have my figures wrong on this so do check with your breeder.
regards
su

Don't walk them until 6 months????? what are you supposed to do, carry him under your arm or not let him see the outside world until he is 6 months old.

Ive never heard such absolute rubbish, Get him out working, he will love it and he needs it

Re: when can I walk him?

Not a very good breeder to give advice like that out huh

Gypsy (she's 12 weeks old now) has her second lot of jabs tomorrow morning , so in a weeks time I get to take her out with Toffee , something ive really been looking forward to

Re: when can I walk him?

We maybe should remeber the difference between walking and exercising - maybe there has been some misunderstanding here.
