A shotgun, marine distress flare, air-raid siren and short range exploding frogs all have their place but for both convenience and avoiding arrest a pea whistle or silent whistle works at a distance and on multiple dogs, it too has the benefit that it will not go off in your pocket accidentally.

Re: How to get their attention!

I have a dog who will ALWAYS run to other dogs (if allowed) and it's very hard to deal with if it's in their nature to be like that and they can love to have a fast reaction to bolt too. He has had this interest from the moment we got him as a pup.

He will come back though once he's got to them (not what we want here as the idea is not to go in the first place!) and of late he's bolted twice BUT has come back at 3/4 way there). Usually he doesn't get the chance.
I usually lead him up if I spot a dog but they do live for that social excitable moment - which is bloody annoying once they've done it a few times.

Even though he did line training and otherwise his recall is ok; I think it can still happen depending on your dogs nature and how he/she sees life. Some may disagree with that but mine (although a fairly calm dog) loves socializing just tooooo much and that coupled with immaturity at 14 months and male hormones - I have a job on my hands!

Going to a class soon that I hope will help us....as it's for dogs of 18 months and over and there's only 8 allowed there - so I'm praying it will happen and be of use.

Weird cos it's so different to my last dog - he was so not interested in other dogs and was just happy mooching doing his own thing! Can't see that happening this time around!!!

Re: How to get their attention!

You've had some good advice.

I've been through everything from animal noises to random noises, different words, names, places - I even did the 50 states just to get attention..

Cya Louie, Bye - works well for recall as well as turning and walking away from him though.

I found that going to class and doing training around other dogs worked, but you have to take it outside too.. otherwise it's pointless. Louie has shown that he isn't getting this focus on me thing because last week - there was a new dog in class and he wanted to say hi all the time... we'll get there - as you will.

Re: How to get their attention!

Yes I agree, and outside once you've done line work/classes - it HAS to start at some point. This is easy for some to achieve and so much harder for others (like with our boy).

Today for instance on our way back from walk he was hmm...shall I go back to my friend again cos we've just had a great play and he's gone that way now..... or do I go with Mum???, so as he was weighing it up in a matter of seconds as he stood there YOU have to react quick here to get that attention. I ran off lots with lots of noise and movement as he decided ok, I'll run like a nutter to you then. So then of course he got lots of verbsal praise and treats. I have to do a succession of treats here and hold that focus otherwise he was ready to double back and go again despite the dog being just out of sight
A few metres on from that then all is fine.

Aah what fun we have

Re: How to get their attention!

I would put her on a long line and do some clicker training with her. I have been amazed at how good the clicker has been at getting Flynns attention and he's very dog reactive but the clicker has stopped that.
