Re: Nikita's behaviour when we eat...

I must admit from the dogs point of view with the sense of smell they have and the smell of our food, its not surprising it can be a little frustrating for a puppy to try to control themselves.

Re: Nikita's behaviour when we eat...

I don't have a table so we always eat off our laps. Obviously they come along trying to get their nose in and I just put my hand, palm toward the dog, between their noses and my plate. It usually works for me, but I have done it from the word go, whereas you have given a reaction so it will take time for Nikita to get the message now.

Ignore the barking, ignore her altogether. I always save them a bit, which a put in their bowls when I have finished. I don't know if that is why my method always works, but it is the way I do it.

Re: Nikita's behaviour when we eat...

Put a baby gate on the door and remove her from the room. She will grow out of it but her behaviour at the mo is not acceptable and you need to be able to eat in peace. I used to say to Flynn "I don't hassle you when you're eating, so you aint gonna hassle me" lol

Very, very food orientated this lot yet don't want to share theirs!

I remember once sitting on the sofa watching TV with my dinner plate on my lap when I looked at my plate and my piece of plaice had gone looked round and saw Kali licking her lips - so you see that's the danger of letting the dogs bog your dinner - sneaky little mare, we did laugh though as none of us saw her do it, lol!

Re: Nikita's behaviour when we eat...

I'm just a bit torn over whether I should put her in a different room or keep her in here but ignore.

My concern with putting her in another room is that once she eventually behaves herself and I bring her back in, she might just start doing it again because I've changed my reaction...I don't want to have to always put her in another room while we eat.

I think for now its worth just putting up with it and ignore her ranting, she'll have to just get over it.

Its strange that she is fine when we eat at the table, we all just finished our evening meal a few minutes ago and she was as good as gold the whole time, just laid quietly under the table until we finished....waiting for some left over sausage and gravy

Re: Nikita's behaviour when we eat...

The Mals have the cheek of the devil when it comes to our food but they are allowed in the room with us now they are older. They always want to see what we've got but have learned that "bug off" means go away which is what they do as they never get scraps from lur plates

It was just a question of them growing up really and also a way of avoiding fights as they would fight over someone else's dinner if we weren't careful. At least they don't do that any more!

When Koda was a puppy she did try a few times to get her nose on my plate but after being told no and gently pushed away half a dozen times she got the message....the only think I ever had to deal with where Scott and Koda were concerned was huge amounts of drool while they waited patiently, they never had any fights over food and I just fed them at the same time right next to each other, in fact I've known Scott budge over and let Koda share his if she finished before him

It seems like Nikita has the cheek of the devil too the same as the Mals!...she is very vocal and certainly lets you know when she's unhappy about something

I have always given the dogs left overs but only when they have been well behaved until we have all finished.

Re: Nikita's behaviour when we eat...

My Mals would rather die than share food with each other, lol but they will let me take anything I want out of their dish or any bone no matter how precious. They trust their humans but not each other so I have to be careful even with table scraps!
