Re: Crate Training a 16 Week old Pup

There's a few important things to it if you're going to get it right and the pup happy within it. There's many threads on the subject as it's been discussed a good few times. Use the search feature and it should bring up more info and chat on it.

Main things are:

Get accustomed to it slowly and never shut the door until the pup is freely going in and out and has had treats and food within it (so it is associated with good things). This could be a few days - depends on how the dog takes to it.

Never punish pup by putting it in there if misbehaving.

When you do close the door for the first few times, be in the house and ignore the situation. Don't make a fuss on it entering and leaving the crate....just make it a matter of fact issue. If the pup is liking it it should rest and sleep in there quite happily.

Then start going out for a few minutes. Ideally this is once pup has had opportunity to toilet and be exercised. Ideally give pup something to do in there (eg Kong filled puppy bone) and again just ignore on return for a minute or so before releasing from crate.
Then increase your time of leaving the pup.

Most importantly for pups safety TAKE COLLAR OFF at all times within the crate!

They are just the immediate things that come into my head but we use one (and still do at 14 months as he loves it) as that is his main 'bed' and you know they're safe and up to no good whilst in it!!!

Good luck

put something soft ( like his blanket) and one or two of his favorite toys in the crate. strap a water bottle on the side.

Re: Crate Training a 16 Week old Pup

Well that was quick i set up the Crate then put in a blanket he likes and he just walks in and out of it willy nilly many times smelling and licking the Crate etc i then put a treat into the back of the Crate he goes in sits down and starts to eat it, finishes the treat then lays down for a sleep. Sound quick to me very happy UPDATE i dont know if this is normal but since introducing him to the Crate 5 hrs ago he's fell asleep in it twice and everytime he leaves the Crate to see me or something else he immediately goes back into the Crate, COMPLETELY ignoring his Basket now.

Re: Crate Training a 16 Week old Pup

OK so its been a a day and a half now since i introduced the Crate to my puppy and he took to it like a duck out of water literally he hasn't gone back to his basket since he slept in it all night aswell. What i wish to know really is the best method to start to close the door on the Crate as i need to go out and insure my stuff isn't chewed to bits, but i dont really want to rush closing the Crate on him and give him the wrong impression but at the same time i need to go out for a few hours. little dilemma not sure what to do any help appreciated, thx
