Puppy jumping all over people
So our 7 month old rottie/staff has a habit of jumping all over people and getting crazy over excited when people come to the house or when we pass them on walks. I know of the whole "ignoring them when you walk into the house until they calm down and then make a fuss of them" and she does this absolutely fine with me. If i come in then she stays relaxed, the only time she jumps on me is when she's really excited and has been jumping on other people.
The problem i think is that i live with my parents and they dont do this, as soon as they walk through the door Tess is jumping all over them, running around all over the place and all they do about it is instantly make a fuss of her and get really excited themselves. Now i've told them about trying to ignore her when they come in but they refuse to listen, they put it down to it being her temperament and that it's just something we'll have to put up with even if it means that when guests come to the house we have to spend 10 minutes watching her literally pushing people over. Is there anything else that i can do about it? I've not had experience with a dog this size before, i was very young when we had our older dog so i dont really know wether or not this is just a phase that all dogs go through during their puppy age that they eventually grow out of, it doesn't seem to be getting any better as she's getting older in fact it seems to be getting worse because she's got quite a decent weight behind her now. Does anyone have any advice? She does calm down eventually after 5-10 minutes but she does it during walks trying to leap towards people and it causes a lot of frustration when it's something that i feel can be fixed. |

Dogs usually do it to gain attention, if people do it and whilst shes jumping up its rewarding it, whats rewarded she will repeat because it works. Dogs only learn one way and thats with repetition and consistency. Every one has to do it and all the time. Your parents are creating the problem and so is everyone else who rewards the madness. Thats why she is doing it on walks, anyone whos interesting shes trying it on with them to get attention. The more hyped and over excited they get the more uncontrollable they will be. Young dogs and pups do tend to be over excitable and hyper its true sort of what they are saying, but its not just part of her personality as they say, its happening because they are not teaching her any different and that its not acceptable. Pups do calm down in time as they mature, but this breed wont even be really starting maturity I would think until 3 years, so they really want another two half years likely more, of being flattened bearing in mind she isnt even full size and weight probably. Honestly you have already proven that the ignore and wait until calm before attention works, that you praise and give attention only to acceptable behaviour. Think your parents need the most training. I would take her to classes too, it should deffinately help to find a good class in your are check out Welcome to APDT - Association of Pet Dog Trainers UK

Re: Puppy jumping all over people
Agree with Hawksport maybe frighten them to make them realise the implications. Dont forget you have a mix of breeds there that you and I know can be wonderful dogs, unfortuanately thanks to the media and some incidents reported with these breeds, a lot of people are paranoid about dogs in general now. Even if they see certain breeds jumping about wildly and it could well just be excitement, some are going to think the worse. So its important that she is trained and kept in control. Try to speak with your parents again, and I would deffinately take her to training. She will be training and meeting people and have distractions, but it will also be in a controlled environment too so will be good all round.

Re: Puppy jumping all over people
Thanks a lot guys, i was sure that i was doing the right thing and to be completely honest i do feel like it's wearing on them a bit. They usually leave me to calm her down when people come to the house but today i just said "you're teaching her that it's ok so you can deal with it" and i dont think they wanna keep being left with it lol.

She still does look very much like one but when she's panting it completely changes and she looks like a total utter staffie ![]() |

Re: Puppy jumping all over people
Hate to bump my own post but would anyone else like to chime in on this? I've received some brilliant advice but i would love to be able to just show my parents a thread where there's just like 20 people agreeing with me!

Re: Puppy jumping all over people
Hi
My dog behaves the same way as yours and it was hard work when I went to my mum's for Xmas. He got spoilt by them, when he was jumping up I put him on the naughty mat and told him to stay in which he did. Mother thought it was cruel and wouldn't listen so I had a job trying to get him to obey me. He was fed food secretly at the table whilst we were eating so every night he expected it. This came about when I showed them how much he is supposed to eat per day. Luckily enough I'm back home now and he is not begging food off me whilst I'm eating. When I told him off, they just praised him or made a fuss of him. If everyone in the household followed suit then it would make the job a lot easier.
