Phew this is hard work....
It's day 5 with the new pup, and she's doing really well.
She's got the toilet training, she's managed to figure out her name, 'come here' and 'sit', and she's getting the hang of 'stay', 'lie down', 'on your bed' and 'leave it'. We're having lots of play, when she's awake, and when she's asleep I spend most of my time reading about dogs and trawling the net for information. She has times when she completely ignores me when we're training (she can't be expected to understand me completely in 5 days, hey?), and sometimes when I'm correcting her behaviour, and she pushes the bounds like mad with assertiveness when she feels like it - what else can I expect from a husky/collie cross? Although I know all this is natural, and both behavioural and obedience training will come with time (and sometimes don't seem to be getting anywhere at the time, but after a while you see the vast improvement they've made - like watching a glacier move!), and that I'm doing well and any frustration at times is just natural as long as I'm not taking it out on her, I guess I'd just like to hear it from somebody else - and ANY advice would also be great - especially when it comes to the times when she just ignores me. The progress we're making together is brilliant though, and I'm really looking forward to the time when my little adorable puppy has grown into a beautiful and confident adult dog - and of course all the learning experiences and silly mistakes we make along the way! |

Do not forget that she is a baby, and she cannot take too much training. A few minutes for each new command is all that is needed or absorbed. You would be better spending time I one command until she has really learnt it before moving on to the next. Puppies want to please, and she will pick a lot of things up on her own, so don't push it. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum!
Clover was very hard work and still is at 10months but wouldn't have her any other way. Just remember when she's ignoring you that she's probably had enough of training or your being boring remember to be fun. |

Re: Phew this is hard work....
hiya, I have had my pup for 5 weeks now, he is a staffy x husky and I found that after about 4/5 mins of training his attention goes else where at first I kept pushing him but after reading stories off here I understood it was like talking to a baby so now after a couple of mins training we have a play about with his toys and he seems a lot happier as I'm not pushing him and seems to enjoy himself through learning, this web site is awesome and so helpful, I hope you have as much fun as I am now having without the blank stares and his head tilting to the left lol

Re: Phew this is hard work....
Cheers for the welcome and advice guys.
Am taking it all in. I think you're right, I'm overwhelming her at times, and sometimes forgetting that the best reward is having fun, and not just the treat in my hand. May sound strange, but it's good to know that I'll be working hard on all this even after 2 years - it stops me thinking I'm a bad owner if she hasn't got it all after 2 weeks ![]() I'll take the intensity of the training down a notch and turn up the fun. ![]() |
